Hello ISNP Upper Campus Students and Families,

This is the time of year that seniors begin to receive notice of acceptance to post-secondary institutions. As you and your student receive this news, please inform Mrs. Van Pelt, so ISNP can help celebrate your child's success! Also, seniors and parents, please continue to review the scholarship section of the weekly newsletters, and take advantage of any opportunities that may be there for you. If you need additional information regarding scholarships or if you would like assistance completing applications, please contact Mrs. Van Pelt, Academic Advisor, at [email protected].

Welcome New Teachers!
Austin Richmond
8th Grade Civics
My Name is AJ Richmond, I grew up in Clewiston, Florida and graduated college in 2008. I was an all-American athlete in college (Cross Country/Track) and competed for ten years post collegiately.

I lived in Colorado for almost three years before returning to Florida in 2015. I began teaching in 2016 at Lake Wales High School where I also coached Cross Country and Track. While at Lake Wales, I coached athletes to win two State Championships (1600 meters, and 4x800 meter relay), three state runner ups, and multiple district, regional and county titles.

I have a wife and six children that range in ages from 4 to 14 years old. In my spare time I enjoy being active with my wife and children, engaging in physical fitness, working in my vegetable garden, playing guitar, and woodworking.
Julie Matheny
6th Grade Mathematics

Mrs. Julie Matheny is very excited to be the new 6th grade math teacher at Imagine. Mrs. Matheny was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, where she lived until 3 years ago when her family made the decision to relocate to Florida. Having graduated with both her bachelor’s degree in mathematics and her master’s degree in secondary math education from The Ohio State University, she is an enthusiastic Ohio State Buckeye fan and, of course, loves math!

Mrs. Matheny’s experience includes over 17 years in both private and public-school settings, teaching math at all levels from middle school to college. Outside of the classroom, Mrs. Matheny and her husband stay busy watching their teenage daughter and son participate in basketball and softball, as well as enjoying all the great activities Florida has to offer.
In The Classrooms
From Mrs. Fields:

In Freshman English class, we have been practicing various types of learning styles to begin our poetry unit. The students created approximately 50 flashcards containing all of our required poetry terms. Then, they practiced learning them in independent and small group settings. We used them to have a class competition in the online game-based learning platform called Kahoot! Next, the students played Poetry Bingo. They could only place a marker on a term after hearing the definition. When they yelled BINGO, they had to have all of the terms correct, based solely on hearing the definitions. This helped to reinforce their memorization skills. After these learning activities, students were introduced to high school level poetry.

Over Spring Break, students will be required to select a poem of their choice to analyze, memorize and present to their classmates upon our return. Ask your student about their poetry choice; it might just lead to a whole new shared love of literature to explore with your teenager!
From Mrs. Rodriguez:
Students in 7th grade ELA are currently working on theme. This past week, they were challenged to come up with themes that were evident in the book, The Outsiders. Then, they had to gather and elaborate on evidence from the book that supported that theme. The photo above is of some of the projects the students created.
From Ms. Ness:

The Carousel of Learning

This past week, students in my class engaged in the Carousel of Learning. This activity involved students observing 12 different black and white photos from the 1920s. Photos were of women voting, children listening to a transistor radio, flappers dancing, sports heroes, Charlie Chaplin, Charles Lindbergh, and various other cultural icons and events from the decade.

Students were tasked with answering questions that were included with each photo. After answering the questions for each photo, they had to complete a photo analysis of any 3 photos of their choice. The photo analysis included identifying activities, people and objects within the picture and then studying the pictures even closer by breaking them into quadrants to see things they may have missed earlier. Finally, the students had to make inferences from the photos they chose and create questions the photo brought to mind.
From Ms. Scarlett:

Spanish 1 and Exploratory Spanish students have been participating in an international competition called Locura de Marzo, which means March Madness. Our version of March Madness is centered around Hispanic music. We started with 16 songs chosen by Spanish teachers from around the world, and for the last two weeks we listened to two songs a day and voted for our favorite, eliminating a song every round. Some students have learned the songs on their own and added them to their playlists!

We have been keeping track on our bracket. Sometimes, it breaks our hearts to see our favorite songs removed from the challenge. Our class favorites have been La Bachata by Manuel Turizo and En Realidad by Angela Aguilar.

Check this out: We are 1 of 1500 schools across the world participating! An estimated 100,000 students participate in voting every day from over 19 countries and ALL 50 states! See the ISNP Sharks on the map above!

This has been a fun way of celebrating Hispanic culture and language in a very practical way.

From Mrs. Bratt:

Gifted Advisory students planned an International Food Share last week. Students brought in foods from Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Italy, England, China, Japan, and the United States. Dishes included empanadas, waffles, spaghetti, sliders, strawberry shortcake, cheese fondue, sushi, and brownies. Thanks to all who brought dishes to share and to Mrs. Moran for her help with the event.
Track and Field
From Coach Milany Quiles:

Our Track and Field Sharks made new personal records at the North Port Invitational last Thursday, March 9. With over 1200 athletes from 35 schools, our sharks brought home some good numbers.

Eighth grader Honor Worth ran the 2-mile run in 13:07 minutes, beating her previous time of 14:37. Cayne Roser, 9th grade, brought in a new record for our boy's mile at 5:15 minutes. Our 4x100m relay team, Andre Thibedau, Zahmir Jackson, Angel Vazquez, and Jordan Kirkus, beat their previous time of 56 seconds with a new team best of 48.2 seconds. Lastly, the 4x400m boy's relay team, Trent Brown, Xavier Ortega, Cayne Roser, and Wesley Woods, set a new record of 4:05 minutes.
