In this future, each child in New Mexico has a fund set up for their education, one rooted in culture and place. Reproductive care is legal and accessible to all, and individuals express their gender without threat of violence. Families have access to robust health care, including mental health. Parents take paid leave to care for elders. Everyone enjoys this glorious land, free of impending climate disasters.
Like you, we are dreaming of this future. While we are working each day to build it, we know the current reality is different. For example:
- 33.3% of counties classify as maternity care deserts in New Mexico.
- 57% of LGBTQ+ youth and 64% of transgender and nonbinary youth experience depressive symptoms.
-
While there are 14 virtual abortion providers in the state, there are only 11 in-person providers, with the majority located in Albuquerque.
- 75% of New Mexicans do not have paid family leave.
We know that to address these and many other challenges, we must invest in the leadership, brilliance, and creativity of women, girls, trans, and gender non-conforming people. We must educate ourselves and our communities to shift the narrative about gender. And we must lead the way in building a collective vision for gender justice and healing.
For over a decade, NewMexicoWomen.Org has been the only fund of its kind in the state, dedicated to bringing about a just and sustainable future. As we navigate the outcomes of the recent election and these unprecedented times, we remain firmly committed to this work.
