Artists of Conscience Series

Jacob Lawrence and the Children of Hiroshima

The Phillips Collection

Dear Friends of Millennium Arts Salon: The exhibition "Jacob Lawrence and The Children of Hiroshima" received an exceptional review in the Washington Post. MAS member Mel Hardy engaged with Phillips Collection Chief Curator Elsa Smithgall to conduct a Spotlight Tour of the exhibition on October 13th. An immersive 360 degree tour of the exhibition has been created and is worth your viewing. In addition, on October 27th, The Phillips Collection’s Chief Curator Elsa Smithgall moderates a conversation and musical program exploring the role of art in addressing nuclear weapons abolition. Artist, curator and historian Leslie King-Hammond, nuclear weapons abolition activist Mel Hardy, and filmmaker and artist Smriti Keshari are featured panelists. This is part of The Phillips Collection's Artist of Conscience Series. Register soon for the Artist of Conscience Hiroshima Exhibition Panel Discussion on October 27th at 6 pm here. The program will be offered both in person and online.

The Artist of Conscience panel brings together figures from the arts, policy, and scientific communities to discuss how the arts can be an impetus for action. The panel focuses on the power of artists as advocates for change and how policy makers and artists have and can collaborate effectively. Event date is October 27th. Please check The Phillips Collection website for more details.

Please join us as Millennium Arts Salon partner, the PostClassical Ensemble (PCE) presents this most fascinating program fusing fine art through curatorial brilliance of Curator Harry Cooper of the National Gallery of Art, with DC's Maestro Extraordinaire Angel Gil-Ordonez of the PCE.  Reserve your tickets

As America's first museum of Modern Art, we at Millennium Arts Salon honor our relationship with The Phillips Collection. At their recent Centennial Gala, the venue at The National Cathedral was adorned spectacularly and all or our MAS Friends and celebrants enjoyed themselves immensely. Everything was lavishly and artistically prepared and presented...the food, drink, and especially the people. See some of the pictures here. Indeed, all of us in attendance from Millennium Arts Salon were all humbled by the honor.

Other notable events:

  • October 15 - Brandywine Workshop 50th Anniversary gala: Oct 14 (5:30pm), exhibition opening at Brandywine; Oct 15 (6:30pm), Brandywine gala celebration at the Philadelphia Academy of the Arts, Philadelphia.  See their website for more details.
  • October 28 – Mid-Atlantic Arts Living Legacy Jazz Awards Program to honor drummer, Roger Humphries, 5:30pm at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia. MAS Member Juanita Hardy is Chairperson of this year's presentation committee for the Jazz Awards for Mid-Atlantic Arts in Philly.

Art Basel Miami is coming in December and our own Amber Robles-Gordon will be represented at this major art fair. The Press Release for this year's edition, the first in-person fair since 2019, references the major energy for all audiences. Not to be missed.

  • Terzo Piano: From Gallery owner Georgio Furioso: “In this third decade of the 21st century, when art is mostly experienced digitally or in high-profile galleries and museums, it is more important than ever to keep community-based galleries alive. In Washington, DC, high real estate prices have pushed many art galleries out of the area. Yet it is essential that we preserve a platform for this city’s many artistic voices. I am committed to making Terzo Piano an enduring part of that platform. I built this gallery space with designer David Jameson more than fifteen years ago for art dealer George Hemphill. Now, as Terzo Piano, it will be dedicated to showcasing the work of both major and under-recognized artists – those vital but often unheard voices that can wake us and move us and give expression to our times. Rather than represent a static stable of artists, Terzo Piano will employ guest curators to ensure that it discovers and presents a dynamic array of talents and visions.”
  • Transformer Art Gallery: Artise Fletcher:  Commorative Strands on view through October 22nd.
  • Hillyer Arts Center; IA&A at Hillyer is excited to feature a series of newly selected DC artists showing "The Ties That Bind" Through October 30th.  Artist Talk on October 20th featuring Imar Lyman (Hutchins).  Contact the gallery for submissions and more information.

  • The Phillips Collection: The Community Exhibition and Phillips@TheArc are must-sees both in person and online.

  • National Gallery of Art: Carrie Mae Weems and the 54th Regiment and the Exhibition on Collectors and Collection are worth our visits..

The Hillwood Estate

A portrait painting of Lloyd Patterson was recently mounted at Hillwood. Mr. Patterson went to Russia with a group of Black American Activists to make a movie. The movie was never made but Lloyd Patterson stayed in Russia, married a Ukrainian Artist, and had a son who became a child movie star. Check back to this space to get information on programming at Hillwood to explore the beauty of the painting, and its implications in our lives today.
