The Patchogue Arts Council • MOCA, LI is proud to present NeoTech from November 6 –December 19, 2021.

The Patchogue Arts Council (PAC) and the Museum of Contemporary Art Long Island (MoCA LI) continues its 2021 theme Coming of Age with NeoTech.  NeoTech presents the work of five artists or collaboratives whose works make use of digital technology.  Included in NeoTech are Carla Gannis, Colin Goldberg, LoVid, MSHR and Elena Soterakis.  

Carla Gannis is an interdisciplinary artist, technologist, and educator based in Brooklyn, New York.  Her virtual and physical works have appeared across the globe.  Ms. Gannis is a visual storyteller who through a medium of silicon and pixels reflects upon “constructions of reality and identity in the twenty-first century”. Although her works are cutting-edge contemporary she often pulls inspiration from the past, mythology, and speculative fiction.  Her “wwwunderkammer” is a multi-reality project that consists of physical and digital artifacts based on 16^th century “Cabinets of Curiosity”. In NeoTech the wwwunderkammer is a Virtual Reality experience which allows the viewer to explore various chambers of wonder. In Peep-o-rama she uses artificial intelligence to create an updated mash-up of a 17^th century work perspective box with contemporary peep shows.

East-end artist Colin Goldberg explores the relationship between technology and personal expression through a variety of media including painting, printmaking, photography, and digital media, most often in some combination.  Many of his works will begin as digital graphics which will be printed onto canvas or paper and worked over with traditional media.  He has coined the term “Techspressionism” the title of a solo exhibition in Southampton NY in 2011 to describe his and other artists working with similar concepts.  During the pandemic, he created the series My Covid Test exhibited in NeoTech and part of his Photoconstruct Series, in which he layers painting, photography and computer derived graphic imagery.

The collective MSHR is Birch Cooper and Breanna Murphy based in Portland, Oregon. Together they create ‘sculptural electronic systems’ in video, performance, and installation.  Their practice evolves through a system in which outputs are reprocessed as inputs creating an ever evolving self-reflective body of work.  For NeoTech MSHR presents a signature piece, “Material Sentience Habitat Ring” which is a one channel video adaptation of an immersive video experience originally commissioned for the MIRA Festival, 2020, Barcelona, Spain.

LoVid is a NY based duo comprised of Tali Hinkis and Kyle Lapidus who are interested in how ‘technology seeps into the evolution of human culture’. Their works create links between handicraft, machine engineering, and digital fabrication in a wide variety of media including installations, tapestries, video, stained glass works on paper, and multimedia performances.  For NeoTech they will engage the viewer in a human/machine interaction which will allow for the creation of a unique object based on one of their works which will then become part of an ongoing project.

Elena Soterakis explores themes of environmental degradation and our relationship with technology and the natural world, through painting, sculpture, and large-scale creative productions. She is the Co-Founder and Director of BioBAT Art Space, a gallery dedicated to the intersection of Science, Art, and Technology located in the Brooklyn Army Terminal.  On June 18, 2021 the women-led international Transdisciplinary Artist Collective for which she is a founding member launched a large-scale art installation “Living Light” to outer space celebrating ocean life and AI technologies.  In “Co-Genesis: New Sea Morphologies”  she explores the human effect on biological evolution through environmental impact and genome editing. She merges emergent technology with old master painting techniques.  Her imagery is developed through an AI process feed of one thousand images of aquatic life forms. The final works become personalized as they are hand painted in techniques derived from the Renaissance.

As early as the 15th century with the camera obscura, oil paints, and optical lenses, through the development of light sensitive chemicals, welding and in the 

mid-20^th century resins and synthetic polymers, artists have used developing technologies as tools and subjects of their works. The tradition continues with the digital revolution.   

NeoTech presents just a few ways artists have adapted digital technologies to art making processes at MoCA LI from November 6 – December 19, 2021.
