Practical Tips for Stressful Times

If you're reading this you're a compassionate, dedicated professional working with families who are navigating difficult times. You may also be facing worrying realities at work and at home. It's easy to feel overwhelmed by the immense challenges in the world. Below are some simple, practical tips for grounding and regulating during stressful times.

One day at a time. Yesterday is complete and tomorrow hasn't occurred yet. Today is what you have available and it's where you can be most effective. Give yourself permission to take life 24-hours at a time. Every day is not the same, and you're not the same every day. Be present in and for today.

Reduce or eliminate stressors. If non-essential activities leave you feeling drained, hopeless, or anxious, then take action to reduce or eliminate them. Examples include taking a break from media channels, opting out of events, canceling subscriptions, and putting a pause on hobbies that aren't adding value to your life. Your time is precious, protect it!

Set a timer. It may not be feasible to spend 90 minutes at the gym or go to a spa for the weekend. However, you can take mini self-care breaks throughout your day. Set a timer on your phone for intervals that make sense for you and then take 5-minutes to stretch, sip some water, look at a tree instead of your screen, or take a stroll.

Honor your process. Allow for the full range of the human experience, including feeling grief, frustration, disappointment, curiosity, inspiration, awe, and delight. Give yourself grace and space to navigate challenges and be fully present for joyful times. You are a human being, not a human do-ing.

Back to basics. When in doubt remember that all living things need water, air, sunshine, nourishment, movement, and rest. Attending to yourself and your basic needs is a critical investment in your well-being and your capacity to serve your clients. Basics are basic because they work!
