2021 H-1 Lottery Update:
More Than 300,000 Registrations Submitted for 85,000 Available H-1 Visas, Second Lottery Selection Round Expected Later in 2021
On June 9, 2021 USCIS announced that it had received 308,613 H-1 registrations for 2021. (In 2020, USCIS received 274,237 H-1 Lottery registrations.) USCIS selected 87,500 registrations for further processing. In 2020, there was a second round of selections in August that selected an additional 18,315 registrations. A second round of selections is also expected in 2021. The H-1 is the most commonly used temporary work visa for sponsorship for newly-hired international professional-level positions (i.e. positions requiring at least Bachelor's degree or equivalent).

The Minneapolis City Council and the Minneapolis Regional Chamber of Commerce Published a New Report on Economic Contributions of Immigrants to the City - More Than 1 Billion Dollars in 2019
A new report presented to the Minneapolis City Council details the economic and labor force contributions of immigrants and refugees to the area. Findings include: immigrants fill key roles in the economy. Immigrants are more than 28% of the area's construction workers, 25% of the transportation workers, 20% of healthcare and social assistance workers and 13% of the STEM workers, even though immigrants only represent 14.9% of the total population.

U.S. Immigration Courts Are Buried in a Backlog of More Than 1.3 Million Cases
Many people are waiting for years to have their day in a U.S. immigration court to apply for relief from deportation from an immigration judge, including possible claims for asylum, permanent resident status or voluntary departure permission. The backlogs have grown significantly in recent years.

USCIS Issues New Policy Detailing Criteria for Expedited Processing of Applications or Petitions
Effective June 9, 2021, USCIS issued new policy guidance describing the case-by-case factors used to evaluate requests for Expedited Processing. The factors include: severe financial loss, emergencies, humanitarian reasons, non-profit organizations whose request is in the cultural and social interest of the United States, U.S. Government interests and clear USCIS errors.

Tip of the Month
New USCIS Policy Increases Validity Period of Certain Employment Authorization Documents from 1 Year to 2 Years
Effective June 9, 2021, USCIS updated its Policy Manual to increase the validity period of Employment Authorization Documents issued to certain applicants. The new rule applies to people who have applied for Adjustment of Status to Lawful Permanent Residence while in the U.S. (i.e. applied for a "green card") under Section 245 of the Immigration Act.
