Refugee Rights Day
Today is Refugee Rights Day! A day to recognize the right to asylum! Why do we celebrate this day in Canada?
On April 4, 1985 "the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms protects the right of refugee claimants in Canada to life, liberty and security of the person, and that claimants are therefore entitled to an oral hearing, in accordance with the principles of fundamental justice and international law." That day was a milestone for refugee rights in Canada. To learn more about the importance of this day, click here.
Tonight, at 6:30pm, COMPASS Refugee Centre will be hosting an art-themed event to raise awareness of Refugee Rights Day in our community and to celebrate the art of downtown Kitchener.
The event consists of an Art Scavenger Hunt followed by a cocktail reception, presentation, prizes and live auction.

Community members who want to attend this event, there is still time to register here.
