We are very proud to announce that our very own Tara Bedard, Immigration Partnership Executive Director, was selected as a recipient of the 2021 National Metropolis Service Provider Award! These awards recognize and celebrate outstanding contributions to the field of immigration and settlement in Canada. We are very fortunate to have her leadership and community-based and collaborative vision that have contributed to making our community more inclusive and welcoming! Congratulations!

Waterloo Region Ethno-Cultural Leadership Roundtable: Challenges, Successes, Resources

Immigration Partnership’s Social Inclusion Working Group invites leaders or members of ethno-cultural groups in Waterloo Region to a virtual roundtable discussion on the topic of social isolation as a result of COVID-19. We aim to bring together leaders from various ethnocultural communities and faith groups to share individual challenges and successes, for collective learning. More information and registration here.

Immigrant Services and Interpretation Open

The KW Multicultural Centre (KWMC) and YMCA Immigrant Services are remotely serving newcomers across Waterloo Region.

The YMCA language assessment centre is doing online language assessments. New clients can call to book an appointment. YMCA school settlement workers are available and continue to serve clients remotely.

In Kitchener-Waterloo and area, KWMC is providing interpretation services remotely (phone or videoconferencing) in over 50 languages. Visit https://kwmulticultural.ca/interpreters or email interpreters@kwmc-on.com if you require an interpreter.

In Cambridge, the YMCA is providing interpretation services (phone or videoconferencing) remotely. Languages include: Arabic, Armenian, Farsi, Persian, Dari, Pashto, Portuguese, Spanish, Turkish. If you require an interpreter email interpretations@ckw.ymca.ca.

Reception House Waterloo Region is remotely serving government-assisted refugees. New refugee arrivals have resumed in Waterloo Region.

The Compass Refugee Centre (formerly Mennonite Coalition for Refugee Supports) is remotely serving refugee claimants. Hearings and other processes have begun again.

Sanctuary Refugee Health Centre continues to meet the health needs of refugees. Call ahead.

Carizon’s Newcomer Mental Health and Well-Being Program: A Promise of Partnership is currently offering both online and in-person supports to refugees living in Waterloo Region. For more information on current groups, trauma counselling, supports for connecting to mental health resources and workshops, call 519 743-6333 or email promise@carizon.ca.

Conestoga LINC language classes are running remotely via Zoom/WhatsApp for any students able to join at this time.

St. Louis English Language Literacy and CLB 1 classes are back to in-person learning during the day at several locations throughout Waterloo Region, including at our newly renovated St. Francis Campus (Queens Blvd & Westmount area). LINC & ESL classes for levels CLB 2-7 are running remotely during the day, evening and on Saturdays. New students with language assessments from the YMCA are welcome. Region of Waterloo Seeking Input on Child Care and Early Years Services
|
|
The Region of Waterloo is inviting parents and caregivers to participate in a survey about child care and early years services. This survey is for all parents and caregivers who live in Waterloo Region and have at least one child age 12 years or younger. This includes all families, both those who use child care or EarlyON programs, as well as those who do not. One response per family is requested. The survey in in English and takes about 10 minutes to complete.

The Ontario government is providing additional support to eligible small businesses to help with the ongoing costs of the COVID-19 pandemic. Confirmed eligible recipients of the Ontario Small Business Support Grant will automatically receive a second payment equal to the amount of their first payment, for minimum total support of $20,000 up to a maximum of $40,000.

The York University invites care workers, settlement workers, service providers, managers and directors to participate in a 10 minute survey to identify key concerns and promising practices in virtual mental health services for refugee and newcomers & to develop guidelines for referring refugee clients to these services. The Evaluating Refugee Programs Project was an initiative to build the evaluation capacity of the refugee sector across Canada in order to improve supports and outcomes for refugee newcomers.
