As we get through the current lockdown and all the challenges posed by the pandemic, the Region of Waterloo encourages its residents to participate in the "In this Together" campaign. The campaign poster is available in 12 languages – share through social networks with the hashtag #BeKindWR, or print and display it in windows to show mutual support during these tough times.

Immigrant Services and Interpretation Open

The KW Multicultural Centre (KWMC) and YMCA Immigrant Services are remotely serving newcomers across Waterloo Region.

The YMCA language assessment centre is doing online language assessments. New clients can call to book an appointment. YMCA school settlement workers are available and continue to serve clients remotely.

In Kitchener-Waterloo and area, KWMC is providing interpretation services remotely (phone or videoconferencing) in over 50 languages. Visit https://kwmulticultural.ca/interpreters or email interpreters@kwmc-on.com if you require an interpreter.

In Cambridge, the YMCA is providing interpretation services (phone or videoconferencing) remotely. Languages include: Arabic, Armenian, Farsi, Persian, Dari, Pashto, Portuguese, Spanish, Turkish. If you require an interpreter email interpretations@ckw.ymca.ca.

Reception House Waterloo Region is remotely serving government-assisted refugees. New refugee arrivals have resumed in Waterloo Region.

The Mennonite Coalition for Refugee Supports is remotely serving refugee claimants. Hearings and other processes have begun again.

Sanctuary Refugee Health Centre continues to meet the health needs of refugees. Call ahead.

Carizon’s Newcomer Mental Health and Well-Being Program: A Promise of Partnership is currently offering both online and in-person supports to refugees living in Waterloo Region. For more information on current groups, trauma counselling, supports for connecting to mental health resources and workshops, call 519 743-6333 or email promise@carizon.ca.

Conestoga LINC language classes are running remotely via Zoom/WhatsApp for any students able to join at this time.

ALL St. Louis CLASSES (including hands-on skills training classes and childcare services) have switched to remote learning until further notice. Program start-up dates for 2021 remain the same and are posted on the St. Louis homepage: https://stlouis.wcdsb.ca.

Food Assistance Outreach During the Pandemic
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, The Food Bank of Waterloo Region has been working together with community programs and agency partners to ensure the continued delivery of services throughout the Community Food Assistance Network. An up-to-date list of vital service programs is now available: thefoodbank.ca/network/map/. You will find a network map at the bottom of this webpage where food assistance programs are identified and program information is available.

Any passengers travelling to Canada who have been in the United Kingdom, South Africa or Brazil in the previous 14 days will be subject to secondary screening and increased scrutiny of quarantine plans.

The purpose of these newsletters is to keep local stakeholders and community members informed about the coordinated response to the evolving COVID-19 coordinated response.
Vaccines continues to be rolled out in the region based on the availability of supply. The recent announcement from Pfizer of a decrease in the Canadian allocation of vaccine has resulted in a need to rework the current vaccine clinic plan for the Grand River Hospital clinic. The reduction in supply is due to Pfizer retooling its production line so they are able to produce increased volumes of vaccine in the months ahead.

This World Education Services (WES) survey on the impact of the pandemic on recents immigrants reports that a significant portion of newcomers have lost jobs and income and cannot meet their basic needs. The results come from 7,496 responses across three surveys conducted in April, June, and August 2020.

The Region of Waterloo has launched a COVID-19 vaccine webpage with FAQs to answer questions such as what is the status of COVID-19 vaccination in Waterloo Region, when vaccines will be available to the broader public in the region, etc. Also, check the Novel Coronavirus webpage. The Workforce Planning Board of Waterloo, Wellington, and Dufferin is asking employers to take part in its survey focused on finding out how businesses and youth can better navigate through the current pandemic. Preliminary findings show that improvement of youth employment depends on the wellbeing and prosperity of the employers.

Statistics Canada reported that from July 1, 2019, to July 1, 2020, Kitchener–Cambridge–Waterloo recorded the fastest growing population after Oshawa and along with Halifax, Kelowna, Calgary and Saskatoon despite Covid-19. Waterloo Region continues to rely on Immigration as its main source of population growth!
