Increasing Immigration: Benefits and Challenges

The results of the 2021 census place Waterloo Region among the top five big urban areas in the country when it comes to immigration. We welcomed 27,840 immigrants between 2016 and 2021, twice as many as we welcomed in the previous five years, according to the census.

This increase in immigration, along with the new Canada’s 2023–2025 Immigration Levels Plan which aims to bring in 1,450,000 immigrants, comes with many changes in population demographics, as well as benefits and challenges to our communities.

"Growing immigration brings many, many benefits to this community that we see by way of greater diversity, contributions to arts, contributions to culture, immigrants are employed across businesses in this region, they own businesses and employ other people and contribute to our community in many, many ways," said our executive director, Tara Bedard, in conversation with Mike Farwell on CityNews 570 last Tuesday, Nov 1.

"As we all know, we here in Waterloo Region and across the country are experiencing challenges when it comes to having enough housing for everybody, overall, and especially housing that is affordable and appropriate to changing populations," Bedard said. "And we also see, when we look across our healthcare settings, they are really stretched beyond capacity and quickly growing the population, it adds to that pressure."
