The 2018
Canada’s World Survey
, conducted by the Environics Institute for Survey Research, found that Canadians increasingly see multiculturalism, diversity, and inclusion as the country's most notable contribution to the world.

To celebrate multiculturalism in Waterloo Region, all residents are invited to take part in the many activities this week during the Virtual K-W Multicultural Festival w/ daily workshops, storytelling, cultures bingo game, art activities, yoga & cooking classes and more!
|

While we celebrate diversity and multiculturalism, we need to work harder to ensure equity, justice and opportunities for all Canadians. Watch this Wellbeing Waterloo Region video series to understand systemic racism, social inequities in our communities and how we can eliminate disparate outcomes.

The Covid-19 crisis has increased the cases of family violence. With the objective of sharing information about easy ways people can help reduce or prevent family violence at home, at work and in the community, a coalition of local agencies and municipalities has just launched the
#KeepFamiliesSafe campaign.
The campaign runs throughout the summer and fall and includes social media, virtual events and outreach to groups including large employers and faith communities.

June is National Indigenous History Month. We invite Immigrants, refugees and all residents of Waterloo Region to celebrate the unique heritage, cultures, art, and traditions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples, and reflect on the systemic inequalities and discrimination that Indigenous peoples face in Canada.

Community Service Updates

|
Immigrant Services and Interpretation Open
- The KW Multicultural Centre (KWMC) and YMCA Immigrant Services are remotely serving newcomers across Waterloo Region.
- The YMCA language assessment centre is placing new clients on a wait list for service once assessments start up again.
- In Kitchener-Waterloo and area, KWMC is providing interpretation services remotely (phone or videoconferencing) in over 50 languages. Visit https://kwmulticultural.ca/interpreters or email [email protected] if you require an interpreter.
- In Cambridge, the YMCA is providing interpretation services (phone or videoconferencing) remotely. Languages include: Arabic, Armenian, Farsi, Persian, Dari, Pashto, Portuguese, Spanish, Turkish. If you require an interpreter email [email protected].
- Reception House Waterloo Region is remotely serving government-assisted refugees.
- The Mennonite Coalition for Refugee Supports is remotely serving refugee claimants.
- Sanctuary Refugee Health Centre continues to meet the health needs of refugees. Call ahead.
- Conestoga LINC classes are running remotely via Zoom/WhatsApp for any students able to join at this time.
- St Louis ESL & LINC classes are running remotely. Teachers have been connecting with their students. If students have not connected with their teacher they can call the school at 519.745.1201. LINC ext 224 or 400; ESL ext 229 or 245. Students may also email at [email protected].

Family Survey
The Waterloo Catholic District School Board is seeking input from families on the reopening of school in the Fall. The survey, which is open until June 30, is available in multiple languages.

to help businesses train their employees in best practices related to reopening.

Kitchener Public Library Open for Curb and Carry
Kitchener Public Library has opened for curb and carry, so customers can now request items online/by phone and come to the library and collect them. This includes languages collections, ESL collections, children's, and of course everything else!

Shopping Angels Canada, part of a global community program designed to provide shopping services to those most at risk for contracting the virus, is looking for individuals who will donate their time to help pick up and deliver groceries along with other necessities.

International migration accounted for 82.3% of Canada's population growth in the first quarter. There were almost 4,000 more permanent immigrants in the first quarter of 2020 (69,787) than in the first quarter of 2019 (65,936). The majority of these immigrants came before the travel restrictions began.
