Join us in Celebrating International Migrants Day with the WRMigFest!

We are pleased to invite you to celebrate International Migrants Day on December 15 by joining us for the last film of the 2022 WRMigFest: "The six" featuring the unknown story of six Chinese men who were among the 700 people who survived the sinking of the Titanic but not the hostility of their hosts in New York City.

Join the conversation! We will also have a post-screening conversation with the filmmaker and the writer Authur Jones to reflect on migration and resettlement. "People would think that Titanic is like a story about rich and poor white people on a ship. It turns out there were black people on board, or Chinese people on board, or the Middle East and people on board," says Jones in an interview. Reserve your spot here.

Other amazing WRMigFest films! In addition, our partners, the Kitchener Public Library, KW Multicultural Centre, Conseil scolaire Viamonde, Idea Exchange, Extend A Family, Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery, Community Justice Initiatives, Toyota and City of Cambridge, are hosting the last five film screenings this week: "On the Fence," "Free Trip to Egypt," "Unspoken Tears," "The First Call" and "19 Days."

For more information on the registration links, films and screening dates, visit www.immigrationwaterlooregion.ca/wrmigfest, or follow us on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn and share with your family, friends and networks.

Thank you! We are incredibly thankful to all our partners for hosting the 2022 Waterloo Region Migration Film Festival!

International Migrants Day, December 18

Why do we celebrate International Migrants Day? On 4 December 2000, the General Assembly, taking into account the large and increasing number of migrants in the world, proclaimed 18 December International Migrants Day. On that day, in 1990, the Assembly adopted the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families. Source: United Nations.

On this Day, we celebrate the vital importance of immigrants to the global economy bringing growth and innovation to the countries where they move to. For example, we recently learned that Canada leads the G7 for the most educated workforce thanks to immigrants; in Ontario, 34.2% of the core-age labour force are immigrants, the highest proportion of all provinces and territories; and Waterloo Region relies on immigration to grow its population and prosperity, ranking the 6th highest proportion of immigrants across Canada’s 41 large urban centres. Let's celebrate International Migrants Day!

This is Home: Building More Welcoming Communities!

The Woolwich Community Health Centre was selected as one of this year's Newcomer Landlord Award recipients! It offered to take on the responsibility of the Woolwich Guest House for Ukrainians in transition by providing health care, mental health and maternity supports. The Centre was also motivated to fund the paid onsite coordinator, collaborate with community resources and groups, partner with settlement services and coordinate volunteer support for food and clothing.

“We have worked closely for over 25 years with local grassroots group Woolwich Healthy Communities and they identified an opportunity to respond to the needs of people affected by the war in Ukraine by approaching the owner of a vacant 10 bed guesthouse in St Jacobs,” says Rosslyn Bentley, Woolwich Community Health Centre Executive Director. She encourages other landlords to welcome newcomers and be willing to take the first step.

Watch her full testimonial here as part of the "This is Home" video series featuring landlords who have helped create a caring community that supports immigrants, as well as the journey of newcomers to find a home.

Learn more about other stories from our 2022 Newcomer Landlord Award recipients here, including Lisa Weiler Haskins, Richard Hamming and Heidi Sproul, non-profit landlords; Isaiah Ritzmann from Open Homes - Kitchener-Waterloo; Moe Hansrod from KW Property Management; and Chinh Pham, Tho Tran and Tony Pham, small private landlords.
