A publication of the Immunization Action Coalition of WA (IACW) and WithinReach
February 2021

Greetings!

In honor of Black History Month, we’d like to take a moment to recognize the African Americans who’ve contributed to the advancements in health and science in the United States and acknowledge the vast amount of work left to be done towards culturally-responsive and equitable healthcare for BIPOC communities.

On February 2nd, the Washington State Legislature passed Senate Resolution 8604 that recognizes "the contribution of Henrietta Lacks' cells to modern medicine and the educational, racial, and economic barriers that played a role in her story; and as the COVID-19 vaccine begins to be distributed, let us recognize the debt we owe Henrietta Lacks and her Family."

We’d also like to give a special shout out to Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett, a viral immunologist at the National Institutes of Health who led the development of the Moderna mRNA COVID-19 vaccine!

In this issue, you’ll find resources on COVID-19 vaccine building, upcoming webinars, news and other information we hope you’ll find helpful in your work.

As always, stay safe, stay healthy, and get vaccinated!

WithinReach
COVID-19 and Flu Public Education Campaign
The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services offers their COVID-19 and Flu Public Education Campaign, which aims to increase public confidence in COVID-19 vaccines while reinforcing basic prevention measures, including mask wearing and social distancing.

The campaign is focusing on a group called “the movable middle”—Americans who want to protect their health but are hesitant about getting vaccines. The goal is to move these individuals from being hesitant to deciding to get a COVID-19 vaccine when one is available.

COVID-19 Vaccine

The NIH’s COVID-19 Vaccination Communication report shares research-informed tips and guidance on how to talk about COVID-19 vaccines with specific populations.

The Washington State Department of Health, in partnership with our health profession boards and commissions, is taking action to support retired health care workers, or those with inactive licenses, to get back into the workforce to administer the COVID-19 vaccine.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has several training programs related to vaccine administration. You can use this guide from the Immunization Action Coalition to help you prepare to administer the vaccine.

News

The problems have been many and varied: holiday delays, scheduling scams, long lines in some places, and not enough demand in others. These initial kinks are getting worked out, but that alone will not get us back to normal anytime soon.

Somewhere between 60 and 90 percent of adults and children must be vaccinated or have antibodies resulting from infection in order to arrive at the safe harbor known as herd immunity, where the whole community is protected.

Public Health – Seattle and King County created a COVID-19 video series that is accessible to community members who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing including ASL interpretation, captions, and transcripts.
