Health Imperatives Awarded $2.5 million from Action for Women's Health

Global Open Call

Funding will support and enhance Health Imperatives’ services including sexual and reproductive health care, support for survivors of human trafficking, parenting programs, and more

We are beyond excited to share the news that earlier this month, Health Imperatives was selected as an awardee of Action for Women's Health, a $250 million global open call funded by Pivotal, launched in 2024 to support organizations working to improve women’s mental and physical health around the world.

More than 4,000 organizations from 119 countries applied for this opportunity. Health Imperatives is one of 80+ organizations that were awarded funding!

We were awarded $2.5 million to support and enhance our programs including sexual and reproductive health care, nutrition assistance, and transformational services for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking.

Founded by Melinda French Gates in 2015, Pivotal works to advance social progress and expand women’s power and influence in the U.S. and around the world.

We are so thankful to Melinda French Gates, Pivotal, Lever for Change, and Action for Women’s Health for enabling more women to improve their physical and mental health, reclaim their power, and lead lives they deserve.

Health Imperatives House Parties

Raise Funds and Awareness

This summer, Phyllis Yale and Tucker Taft graciously opened their home to introduce the work of Health Imperatives to their friends and colleagues. It was the perfect opportunity for Julia Kehoe and Dr. Tim Spurrell to talk about the programs and services Health Imperatives provides to support people living and working on the Vineyard.

The following month, Health Imperatives Board Vice Chair Lauren Payne and her husband Bill Swanson hosted a similar event at their home on the South Shore. At both events, the guests asked lots of questions and were enthusiastic to get more involved with our work. People are connecting us to foundations, corporations, and friends to help us get the word out and close funding gaps.

If you are interested in hosting a house party in 2026, please contact Elizabeth Morse. Help us spread the word about Health Imperatives' critical work to support those who fall through the cracks of mainstream systems of care.

Giving Thanks

It is difficult to express how grateful I am for the outpouring of support from our community.

The grants and donations we have received come at a critical time.

Uncertainty and reductions in benefit programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will increase the demand for our services.

The defunding of Health Imperatives’ Medicaid payments as part of the Trump administration’s “Big Beautiful Bill” put our sexual and reproductive health programs - which were not fully funded to begin with - at risk.

The funding we have received will fill these gaps, and allow us to have more flexibility each time the federal government makes another policy change or budget cut. It is a relief to not have to worry as much.

At the same time, our Governor and Legislature are determined to improve and protect women’s health. As of this writing, there is a supplemental bill in the House and Senate that, if passed, will cover the shortfall in Medicaid payments so we can continue to bill Medicaid for the services we provide in our seven clinics.

I am thankful that they, and all of you, are on our team. Together, we will continue to weather the storm and provide vital care and support to 24,000 individuals and families across our region.

With so much gratitude and appreciation,

Julia E. Kehoe
