From Student, to Alumni, To Advocate: Saugar Maripuri's Legacy of Giving Back
A successful nephrologist in Minneapolis, Saugar Maripuri '99 says he had to work hard to succeed at IMSA, which, in turn, prepared him well for higher education, medical school, and residency. The 24/7 residential environment at IMSA was ideal for group projects, which were his most valuable learning experiences professionally. From Skokie, Saugar enjoyed collaborating with his peers from diverse backgrounds and Illinois communities.

“I owe my own success to the rigor of IMSA,
to being around peers smarter than me.”

Saugar is a frequent donor to the IMSA Fund, giving for 18 years now. Why the sustained commitment? He cites several reasons. First, he wants to support other students who want to pursue big dreams similar to those he had. Second, he feels he owes IMSA and the taxpayers of Illinois a lot for his success. Third, he likes supporting STEM. Fourth, he is confident his gifts will be used in a reasonable, positive, and responsible way. All of this adds up, he says, to IMSA being a “#1 place to give to make a charitable impact.”
Today, Saugar treats kidney disease in underserved populations and trains medical students, residents, and fellows; healthcare justice is very important to him. He, his wife, and their son enjoy experiencing new cultures and cuisines through travel and snuggles from their Labradoodle.
“IMSA made me a better person and a lifelong student,” Saugar says. Donating regularly is one way he says thank you and pays it forward.
Thank you for your commitment to IMSA and for inspiring others through your continued generosity Saugar!

Student Research Featured at International Student Science Fair: Matching Gift Challenge Inspires More Opportunities
Joshua Lee '24 and Divya Brahmbhatt ‘24 represented IMSA at the International Student Science Fair (ISSF) held at the Queensland Academy for Science, Mathematics, and Technology in Australia. This prestigious event brings together students who are passionate about innovative research and allows them to meet and collaborate with students worldwide.
Two years ago, a retired science faculty member, Dr. David Workman, established the Workman International Travel Fund. The endowment supports students with international travel expenses and allows them transformative educational experiences. Dr. Workman is offering a $10,000 matching gift opportunity to enable more students to explore the world, gain new experiences, and broaden their educational horizons. Workman's matching gift challenge means that every donation made to the International Travel Endowment will have twice the effect, ensuring students have access to global perspectives that can change the world. Gifts to the Workman International Travel Endowment can be made at imsa.edu/giving and writing “Workman Fund'' in the designation box.

Joshua's project, "Soil Carbon Sequestration for Climate Change Mitigation: Understanding Enzyme Temperature Optimum and Function for Soil Organic Carbon Stability," aims to tackle climate change by lowering the amount of carbon dioxide in the air by storing carbon in vegetation, soil, and oceans.
Divya's project, "Precision Immuno-RadioNanoTheranotics for Metastatic Cancer," aims to improve healthcare delivery and outcomes for patients with ovarian cancer. His research focuses on X-ray-induced photodynamic therapy (XPDT), specifically Immuno-RadioNanoTherapy (IRNT).

NASA Names IMSA Students TechRise Winners
Nitya Jakka '24 was named an Earth Pize 2023 Scholar by the Earth Foundation for her start-up, Terraclu. Terraclu is a website and sensor system that predicts the ethylene output levels of crops during transportation and storage to recommend temperature and humidity changes to maintain crop quality. The website features different platforms for retailers, transportation companies, and farms to ensure that crops are delivered at a ripeness level corresponding to the current supply to minimize waste.
The Earth Foundation, based out of Geneva, Switzerland, hosts the annual Earth Prize competition for teens and rewards those whose projects have the most potential to address climate change. Over 1270 student teams from over 1000 schools across 116 countries and territories worldwide submitted projects. Nitya's project, Terraclu, was chosen as one of only 37 teams to be selected as The Earth Prize 2023 Scholars.

Leaving a Lasting Legacy - The Power of Bequests
Did you know you can make a lasting impact on IMSA through a simple act of generosity in your will? A bequest in your will is a simple way to ensure your wish to support IMSA can continue for generations.
Some may be asking, what is a bequest? A bequest is a gift made through your will or trust that allows you to support charitable causes during your lifetime and beyond. By including IMSA in your estate plans, you can create a lasting legacy that can benefit students, teachers, and the entire IMSA community.
It’s easy to make a bequest in your estate plan. Simply add a provision to your will or trust that designates how and when a gift will be made from your estate. You can leave a specific amount, a percentage of your overall estate, or even name IMSA as a retirement plan or insurance policy beneficiary.
Although this may seem like a morbid topic, it’s important to understand the options available to an individual who wants to ensure support for future students of IMSA for many generations to come. Together, we can continue to support IMSA’s mission and leave a lasting legacy!
If you have any questions or would like to learn more about ways to donate, please contact Cesar Patino at 630.907.5051 or email at cpatino@imsa.edu.
