Early Detection is Prevention
Combined with living a healthy lifestyle, staying up to date on recommended screenings is an important element in supporting lifelong health. Here is a general guideline of common preventative screenings by age, although your provider may recommend different screenings based on your medical history and risk factors:
-
Age 21: Cervical cancer screening every 3-5 years with pap smears and HPV testing
-
Age 40: Breast cancer screening annually through mammograms
-
Age 45: Colon cancer screening every 10 years by colonoscopy or stool‑based tests
-
Age 50: Prostate cancer screening with PSA blood tests (and at 45 for higher risk individuals)
-
Age 50: Lung cancer screening annually through low-dose CT scans (for eligible individuals)
An annual checkup with your primary care physician is an ideal opportunity to review your screening needs. If you’re due for a physical, a screening, or simply want guidance on lowering your cancer risk, now is the perfect time to take action. National Cancer Prevention Month is more than an awareness campaign—it’s an opportunity to protect your future health.
