Making an Impact: Advancing Early Detection for Prostate Cancer | | Every year, the money raised from the Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation’s events and other initiatives is awarded to programs making a difference in cancer research, treatment, and prevention. In November 2025, over $300,000 was granted to eight programs, and throughout 2026, this monthly Impact Update e-newsletter will showcase our awardees and their incredible work. | |
September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, and we are proud to highlight the work of Dr. Peter LaViolette and his team at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) in Milwaukee. Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among men, with approximately 1 in 8 men expected to receive a diagnosis during their lifetime.
The good news is that when detected early, before it spreads, the five-year survival rate exceeds 99%. With support from the Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation, Dr. LaViolette and his team are developing a groundbreaking AI-enhanced MRI approach designed to identify prostate cancer in just 10 minutes, helping make screening faster, more affordable, and more accurate.
Over the past six months, the team has enrolled 44 patients in its ongoing prostate cancer imaging research program, including seven participants in the VLCF-funded study. These patients have completed specialized MRI scans prior to surgery, and their tissue samples are now being analyzed to help train and validate the artificial intelligence technology.

This work builds on one of the world's largest prostate cancer imaging datasets, developed at MCW through years of collaboration among radiologists, surgeons, pathologists, and patients. By combining this extensive database with cutting-edge artificial intelligence, researchers hope to improve cancer detection, reduce unnecessary procedures, and help physicians better target biopsies and treatment. Ultimately, the goal is to provide more precise, personalized care to men with prostate cancer.
At the Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation, we know the power of awareness, early detection, and continued investment in research. The progress being made at MCW is helping advance how prostate cancer is detected and treated, offering hope for better outcomes for men and their families. We are proud to partner in this important work, moving us closer to a future where prostate cancer is detected earlier, treated more effectively, and ultimately cured.
| SEPTEMBER IS PROSTATE CANCER AWARENESS MONTH | |
Prostate Cancer Awareness Month is a time to raise awareness about the most commonly diagnosed cancer among men. Approximately 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime, but when detected early – before it spreads – the five-year survival rate exceeds 99%.
Men are encouraged to start talking with their doctors about screening around age 50. For those with a strong family history, conversations should start even sooner. Early detection is critical; it provides the best chance for successful treatment and more options for care.
At the Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation, we believe prevention starts with action. A simple conversation with your doctor could be one of the most important steps you take for your health.
Follow us on social media to help spread awareness and encourage the men in your life to prioritize their health.
| | Childhood Cancer Awareness Month: Supporting Research, Treatment, and Hope | | |
Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease among children in the United States. Yet, pediatric cancer research receives less than 4% of federal cancer funding.
At the Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation, we are committed to changing that. Since our founding in 1971, our mission has been to prevent cancer, provide the best care to those fighting it, and find a cure. Proceeds from our events and initiatives are annually awarded to programs that are making a difference in cancer research, treatment, and prevention for both adults and children.
Supporting pediatric cancer research and treatment has long been one of our priorities. Every year, a portion of our funding is directed specifically to pediatric programs – a commitment we proudly uphold.
In honor of this month, we invite you to learn more about the organizations we’re supporting and how, together, we are making an impact.
