Impact Brief Highlights State Opioid Response Grant Program |
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration-funded State Opioid Response (SOR) grant program provides resources to states and territories. It aims to advance efforts to prevent, reduce harm, treat, and support recovery for individuals at risk or who have an opioid use disorder and concurrent substance use disorders. An impact brief on this program has been developed by the National Association of State Alcohol and Drug Abuse Directors in partnership with ORN. It highlights how SOR-funded programs are helping to get medication into the hands of those who may witness and intervene during an overdose, supporting services to help individuals maintain recovery and more. Report Examines Organ Donation After Overdose Death
As younger Americans develop chronic disease with the potential for organ failure and our aging population increases, the waitlist for hopeful transplant recipients has increased. There has also been a surge of drug overdose deaths of people who were previously healthy and would otherwise be ideal organ donor candidates. Successful transplant outcomes have been reported for donors with a range of toxicities, however, controversy exists around the viability of organs after illicit drug overdose. This report, from the American College of Medical Toxicology developed in partnership with ORN, examines cases in which organ donation occurred to highlight the considerations of organ viability after a substance use related overdose. With proper support and services, families can have a positive impact on their loved ones' substance use outcomes. The Partnership to End Addiction, in partnership with ORN and as part of an overall collaborative effort with the National Association of Counties, is launching a learning community complete with monthly meetings, office hours and moderated discussion groups. The program begins this Fall, with the first session covering existing research on the outcomes and obstacles of family involvement in addiction prevention, treatment and recovery. Participants can attend any session and will have access to experts and discussion groups throughout the six-month program. Learn more.

Initiation of Buprenorphine in Outpatient Settings | |

Xylazine and HIV in the Era of Synthetic Street Drugs

This presentation will review the history of U.S. street drug markets since the early 1990s to explain the emergence of xylazine, fentanyl, and crystal methamphetamine in regional markets formerly dominated by heroin and cocaine. It will examine the relationship between each of these newly prevalent synthetic substances and describe what we know so far about their impact on HIV and related comorbidities. It will also assess how the public health impact of recent transformations to the U.S. narcotics supply relates to the experience of drug consumption and the way that people use drugs in their everyday lives.
