February 2024

Dear members and friends:

Do you like stargazing? I do and love when the Florida skies are bright and clear to show the whole constellation.

You’ve heard me say before that grantmaking is our “North Star”, and that star is shining brightly. We just concluded our first Grant Recipients Showcase, allowing members and their guests to meet all the nonprofits who have received grants from Impact100 Martin, regardless of the size. This is just a part of the local constellation, but attendees walked away inspired by how the nonprofits are meeting essential needs in Martin County and how our grants have been leveraged for greater impact. The nonprofits were thrilled to be there and have the opportunity to engage our members at a deeper level. Thank you so much to Beth Lonnes, Co-Chair of our Events Committee and Karen Homer, her Co-Chair for this event, as well as all the liaisons who provided support to the nonprofits. Home run!!

Our Grants Committee has also been hard at work evaluating more than 30 Letters of Intent and identifying our semi-finalists who are invited to submit full applications. I am so impressed with the number of “new stars in the sky”, first time applicants for Impact Grants, and the impactful projects being proposed. Many thanks to our new Visioning Team who put air under the wings of many nonprofits, helping them understand the process and encouraging them to dream big.

Our Membership Committee is also charging hard to get us to 400 members so we can award more grants than ever before – 4 grants of $100,000 each. If you haven’t renewed, now is the time! If you have been meaning to invite a friend to join, now is the time. We are close, close, close and with your help we can get to 400.

We are women who make a difference. My favorite quote from the Showcase was one member who said, “Now I really get it. I heard the story and liked it, but now I see the impact we’re having and how it spreads to more impact.” Yep … that’s who we are.

With gratitude for your generosity no matter the form it takes,

Maureen Cotter, President

Much thanks to our committee members and the Community Foundation of Martin-St. Lucie for their dedication progressing through the grant cycle process.

Kudos to all of you who have renewed, attended a Meet and Mingle or Impact100 Martin event with a friend, and talked to your friends about joining this amazing group of women who make significant, game changing impact for the Martin County local charities and their constituents!

We are so close to hitting over 400 members, a huge milestone for Impact100 Martin and our local nonprofits.

Council for Environmental Studies Center Ribbon Cutting

It was a beautiful morning celebrating Grandparent’s Day and the grand opening of the ESC Wet Lab. Several of our Impact members were in attendance and President Maureen Cotter joined Environmental Studies Center Director Valerie Gaynor for the ribbon cutting.

It’s so exciting to see a plan come to fruition and even better when it’s greater than the original plan! Thanks to the hard work and creativity of Director Gaynor, this 2024 Impact Grant enabled an incredible environmental experience for students and our entire community!

The new Wet Lab now has all new tanks, including a cylindrical octopus tank, touch tanks, teaching spaces, new decking, air conditioning, and is ADA compliant. This space is utilized all year long with Martin County School Students attending annual field trips and the ever-popular summer camps.

What an investment in supporting environmental education within our community!

Sunday, March 10, 2024

11:00am - 3:00pm

$65 per person includes: Trolley Tour & Brochure Map, Choice of 3 lunch options plus a beverage & dessert, Tips, and all Mural Painting Supplies & Experience.

Join in for an enjoyable excursion to Hobe Sound to view some of their outdoor gallery of 25+ mural walls. Many have been created by the local non-profit Landmark Arts, Inc., “Creating Community Culture”.  (an organization spearheaded by one of our Impact100 Members – professional artist & tour guide, Nadia Utto)

This project has received a mARTies Award and is featured in the State’s designated Florida Mural Trail. We’ll hear about the history of murals as a cross-cultural art form and the stories behind these local ones as well as looking for the hidden design element in each wall! Additionally, we will have an especially unique opportunity to become a mural artist by adding our own painterly touch to a community mural!

Enjoy an air-conditioned ride on a Molly’s Trolley around the main streets of Hobe Sound, staying on board / or hopping on & off to view the murals up close. At the tours’ conclusion, we will then enjoy a leisurely lunch crafted just for us at the new Taste Restaurant location, while painting on the covered patio mural.

Susan Melians is a retired executive from NextEra Energy and Florida Power & Light Company (FPL). She grew up in Montgomery, Alabama with strong family values of community and service to others. A graduate of Auburn University with a BS degree in Industrial Engineering, Susan moved to Florida in 1987 when she joined FPL. She married her best friend Kaz in 1994, and they moved to Palm City in 1998 where they raised their now 23-year old twins, Gavin and Miranda.

During Susan’s 36-year career at FPL, she served in a variety of executive leadership roles including vice president of human resources for FPL and vice president of operations services for power delivery. In January 2019, Susan transferred to Pensacola to support the acquisition of Gulf Power by NextEra (the parent company of FPL) serving as vice president of customer service and external relations. It was during this time that Susan was introduced to Impact100 and inspired by the amazing work being done in Florida’s panhandle.

When Sarah Murphy invited her to a local Impact event in 2021, she jumped at the chance to join!  Susan says spending time with like-minded women working together for a common goal is uniquely stimulating and fun. She considers seeing how quickly our sponsored projects are benefiting the people of Martin County incredibly rewarding and a great return on our investment!

Susan’s passion for community, mentorship and youth development has long guided her career and personal involvements. She is a member of Auburn University’s 100 Women Strong supporting girls in engineering, has served on the executive council of the Center for Energy Workforce Development and has supported multiple STEM and robotics efforts. Susan is an active member of the St Mary’s Episcopal Church outreach ministry, a past board member of the American Red Cross, the Boys and Girls Club of Martin County, the Florida Chamber Foundation, and Gulf Power’s Economic Development Fund.

PNC Private Bank is a proud sponsor of Impact 100 Martin since 2019. Within the Bank and across the communities we serve, we recognize the importance of supporting organizations like Impact 100, who are inspiring women to recognize that philanthropy is power.

As wealth, businesses and investment portfolios are shifting into women’s hands at a record pace, women are taking the lead and making an impact with their own unique approaches to giving. Philanthropy is transitioning from a prescriptive model, where the goal is to make the donor feel good about a donation, to a catalytic model, which seeks to deploy capital to solve problems.

Tracy Sorzano, senior vice president and Wealth Strategy regional manager for PNC Private Bank, suggests that the most important step in determining a philanthropic focus might be to ask yourself, “Why?” Sorzano is a founding member of Impact 100 Martin and has served on both the advisory board and events committee. She was drawn to the spirit of Impact – a shared desire to improve the community through collective giving, knowing that pooled resources can make a greater impact than individual contributions could make.

As wealth continues to shift to women over the next decade, women’s influence over philanthropy will continue to grow. Actions speak louder than words, and the steps women take today to deploy capital to solve the problems they care about most can have global economic implications in the future. PNC’s dedicated teams have the knowledge, experience, and desire to ease financial complexities and deliver peace of mind to help our clients achieve their financial purpose. So, let’s get started!
