The Guiding Light of Impact100

Ladies – WOW! 572 members, which equates to five full grants. As of the end of Season 9, we will have awarded just under $2.9 million to nonprofits in Martin County to create transformative change. I am awed, humbled and, as we say in the South, tickled to pieces.

I recently had lunch with a fairly new member, and our conversation reminded me of something important: as we grow, it is helpful to pause and remember the principles that guide Impact100.

Impact100 is a little different from many philanthropic or social organizations, and that difference is part of what makes it so meaningful.

First, we do not compete with organizations that provide vital operational support for our local nonprofits. Groups such as United Way, Children’s Services Council, Community Foundation Martin–St. Lucie, Hobe Sound Community Chest and the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties help agencies sustain their day-to-day programs and services. We are proud to stand beside these partners as part of the broader nonprofit ecosystem that supports our community.

Second, we do not hold fundraisers. Our grant funds come directly from our members. Each member contributes $1,100 annually: $1,000 goes toward grantmaking and $100 supports our operational costs. Every dollar collected for grants is awarded each season.

Another unique aspect of Impact100 is the flexibility of member involvement. There are no requirements for meeting attendance or committee service. Members may choose to participate as much or as little as they wish. Whether you volunteer, attend events or simply cast your vote, every member plays an equal role in the process.

Our philanthropy focuses on five areas: Arts, Culture & Preservation; Education; Environment, Recreation & Preservation; Family; and Health & Wellness. Through events such as Impactful Conversations, Culture Club, Nature Club and See Your Impact visits, we continue learning about the needs and opportunities across Martin County.

Impact100 began in 2001, built on the idea that women coming together can create meaningful change. It is exciting to see that spirit alive and growing here in Martin County.

Thank you for being part of it.

President, Impact100 Martin

A heartfelt thank-you to our Grants Committee, who have been working diligently since early December reviewing Letters of Intent. Their work continues as they evaluate full applications, financials and supporting materials.

Semifinalist site visits were held March 9–11. Each nonprofit did an excellent job sharing additional information about their projects with the Grants Committee and answering questions about their proposed initiatives.

The Finalists Selection Meeting will take place on March 18, and finalists will be notified on March 19. Be sure to watch your email and our Soucal Media pages for the announcement once the nonprofits have been notified.

Members will also receive a special edition email with information about the finalists. Please take time to review the materials and watch the videos before the Grant Awards Celebration so you can make an informed decision about which nonprofit project should receive an Impact Grant.

Membership Committee Update

What a year it has been for the Membership Committee! Thanks to our terrific community captains who worked tirelessly to retain members while recruiting new members. We also applaud members who attended a Meet & Mingle with a friend who decided to join, or those who met a friend over lunch or dinner to share the wonderful story of how important Impact100 Martin is for the Martin County nonprofits we serve. This is how Impact100 Martin grows, and we couldn’t do it without you.

Welcome to Our New Impact Members!

In February, we were thrilled to welcome these 55 NEW Members to our collective giving community! These women represent neighborhoods and communities throughout Martin County, and we are grateful to have them as part of Impact100 Martin.

Looking Ahead

While we celebrate our incredible final number of members, the Membership Committee is also looking ahead to our 10th anniversary year. We remain focused on retaining our members while continuing to grow membership. Over the summer, the committee will refine our messaging, review the Meet & Mingle process, and build even stronger alliances with our outstanding community captains.

For those of you who recently joined and would like to become more involved with membership, we would welcome your participation on the committee. Whether you are interested in hosting a Meet & Mingle, delivering a welcome bag to a new member in your community, serving as a sub-captain, or helping organize marketing materials, we would be honored to have you join the Membership Committee.

There are many opportunities to get involved, meet the incredible women who make this organization so impactful, and help us continue reaching our goals. Please email communitycaptain@impact100martin.org, and someone from our committee will be in touch.

Your Membership Co-Chairs,

Judy Zanchi, Sarah Murphy and Kallie Jurgens

Host a Meet & Mingle

Interested in introducing your book club, neighborhood group, or circle of friends to Impact100 Martin? Hosting a Meet & Mingle is an easy and impactful way to do just that.

You provide the guests and light refreshments, and we’ll take care of the rest. A representative from our Grants and Membership teams will join you to share a brief, engaging 20-minute presentation about our mission, membership, and collective Impact.

It’s simple, social, and a wonderful way to grow our community of women creating positive, lasting change.

To get started, contact us at info@impact100martin.org.

Kallie Jurgens

Kallie Jurgens attended a Meet & Mingle at Indian River Plantation three years ago and immediately joined Impact100. Her reason: the caliber of the people she met. Kallie is a true go-getter, and the abilities, talents, friendliness, and desire to make an impact in their communities that she witnessed were completely aligned with her own purpose.

Kallie earned a BA and a master’s degree in journalism and became a managing editor for various newspapers and national magazines in the New York City area. She soon found her niche by founding her own company. As a consultant in corporate communications and marketing, she facilitated internal communications for large companies and helped them market their products.

Kallie’s husband, John, was a labor lawyer for a union in NYC. When the time came to retire, the couple moved to Stuart in 2009, and Kallie chose to join John in retirement as well. Their two sons, Shaun, a detective and deputy sheriff in Virginia, and Justin, a facilities supervisor at the Smithsonian, were already launched in their careers. While Kallie and John keep a townhouse in Fredericksburg, Virginia, Stuart is their home.

Philanthropy has always been an important part of Kallie and John’s life, supporting causes such as John’s NYC school, St. Joseph’s School here, the Oceanographic Society, and the Wreaths Across America organization. Kallie quickly became active in Impact100 Martin and currently serves on the Membership, Communications, and Scholarship Committees.

She loves travel, cooking, walking, and Pilates. We are delighted that she has found the time to become such a vital member of our group.

Sunflower Celebration Workshop

The Sunflower Celebration Workshop was a joyful and creative gathering where participants explored both floral design and fine art. Guests began by crafting their own beautiful sunflower bouquets with guidance from floral expert Ambar Zetune of Air & Petals, then continued the experience with a Painting the Masters session led by professional artist Danuta Rothschild, learning techniques to create their own inspired artwork. Everyone left with new skills, beautiful creations, and a memorable afternoon celebrating creativity and community.

Many thanks to Nadia Serenyi for curating a fantastic series of four Culture Club events this season.

Community Spotlight: Shaping the Future of Martin County Health

Our recent Impactful Conversation on March 12 brought together community members and leaders at the Elliott Museum for a deep dive into the healthcare landscape of Martin County. This event served as a vital educational platform for our members and the public to better understand the complex health needs of our region as we evaluate future $100,000 Impact Grants.

Key Takeaways from Our Experts

The program featured a powerhouse panel of speakers who provided a comprehensive "big picture" look at our community’s well-being:

  • Emily Carmichael, MPH (Director of Health Planning, HCSEF): Emily shared critical, data-driven insights into the unique health status of Martin County and its four surrounding counties. She emphasized a “data-to-action” approach to improve resident outcomes.
  • Michelle Miller, CPM (Human Services Director, Martin County Board of County Commissioners): Michelle discussed the local government's role in addressing human services and the existing frameworks that support our residents.
  • Josh Jenkins, FLSE II (Community Risk Reduction Specialist, Martin County Fire Rescue): Josh highlighted the essential role of First Responders and local initiatives focused on community safety and injury prevention.

Why These Conversations Matter

As a women-driven philanthropic organization, Impact100 Martin has contributed $2.32 million to local nonprofits over the last eight years. By educating ourselves on one of our five core focus areas—Health & Wellness—we ensure our collective giving has the greatest possible impact.

"We need to start at the beginning if we’re going to have discussions that lead to solutions," noted Event Co-Chair Karen Hermanson. "The more educated we are, the better impact we can have in analyzing and funding programs."

Resources & Appreciation

For those who couldn't attend or wish to revisit the data discussed, a variety of helpful resources were provided to all attendees. You can access these materials by clicking here.

Congratulations to our Event Co-Chairs, Patty Koff & Karen Hermanson for such a wonderfully curated and very informative event.

Congrats to our Season 9 new members, Aleisha Coleman and Beth Galt-Salsamendi, for winning our health-themed door prizes! There’s nothing like walking away with a little extra 'wellness' in hand.
