Volume 311

March 11, 2026

Last week’s Volume (re) highlighted Pareto’s Principle, a.k.a. the 80/20 Rule, and this analytical prism’s upside potential with versatile application. In most scenarios, methodical focus on smaller subsets can deliver oversized results.

To identify opportune subsets requires nimble attentiveness and, as Yogi Berra said:

“You can observe a lot by just watching.”

A thoughtful author’s insightful perspective:

“By observing people, objects, and events around us, we can gain insights, understanding, and knowledge that we might otherwise miss. This quote's significance lies not only in its practicality but also its underlying philosophical concept. It resonates with the idea that there is deep wisdom embedded in the act of observation itself.”

With every single patient, you purposely observe a LOT. It’s ingrained and highly beneficial.

Invest a few moments to think about how Powers of Observation should view your Practice Growth Strategies.

As our 2026 lookout continues, these Observations are clear:

#1. Patient-centrism is always vital, perhaps more than ever.

#2. Practicing The Golden Rule with all we serve is an aspirational North Star and competitive advantage.

#3. Third-Party Administrators (TPA) of hearing care “plans” confuse the masses with short-term thinking about faux savings, not Quality of Life outcomes. True that.

#4. For chronic reasons, aggregate measures of industry growth remain in a stagnant range, not reflecting acceleration in age-related needs.

As a result of these evident factors, we assert that…

#5. TPA strategies anticipate Hearing Care Professionals to not collectively implement effective countermeasures in patient-focused terms. In truth, your patients deserve honest clarity on why high-quality hearing care is a multi-year journey, not a singular moment.

Why emphasize TPA matters? Because We Observe this hot-button issue's prevalence in people’s minds.

Here’s another Mission Critical Observation: expanding Physician Referrals is an integral growth pathway virtually every Practice aims to prosper with. In fact, many intend for Physician Referrals to be their #1 referral source. Beyond increasing the # of qualified candidates expertly evaluated, enlightened Practices recognize it is good for business in terms of quantifying the value of medical networking.

Directionally, which Practice trend would be more appealing to a prospective acquirer?

Physician Referrals of Qualified Candidates

Volume 299 stated:

“As Whole Person Care advocates, what do most current and prospective physician referral source recipients want? As medical case management indicates, they’d like:

➡️ Inbound: Your Practice’s referrals to their medical specialty

➡️ Outbound: Trusted resources in other medical specialties, including hearing care

“Knowing medical referral patterns should be 2 or multi-way streets instead of ‘unethical collisions’, there’s (as usual) scarce traffic on the extra mile. To drive better quality of life outcomes, speed up going there.”

This leads to an On Point research article authored by distinguished Professors at WashU Medicine in St. Louis:

“So what? Elevating the impact of implementation science.”

“Billions of dollars are invested each year in scientific research, yet too often the benefits stop at journal publications rather than reaching patients, communities or policymakers.”

“This ‘know-do’ gap is among the most pressing and underaddressed challenges in health research today.”

“Implementation science emerged to confront that challenge by studying how evidence-based programs and policies are adopted, adapted and sustained — or discontinued.”

“It’s important to track earlier use indicators — such as whether evidence is being noticed, discussed or taken up by practitioners, organizations or decision-makers.”

“Generating new knowledge alone no longer meets the moment. Implementation science must put impact at the center of how research is designed, evaluated and rewarded. The result could be faster translation of evidence into action, more equitable health outcomes and greater public value from scientific investment.”

Do You Observe similarity to our oft-repeated Guiding Principle about Translational Research?

HDI’s patient-centric and progressive approach defines it as “helping to translate complex medical analytics into more easily understood formats which empower the maximum number of clinicians and patients to make well-informed diagnostic and treatment decisions.” Just imagine how improved medical information transparency can benefit all involved.
