Friends,

I am thrilled that the United States is positioned to soon be led by a woman, especially since Kamala Harris has been part of an administration that has proven its ability to implement bipartisan policies that have the United States leading the world on investments in smart energy solutions and preparing the United States to continue its world economic leadership into the future. In addition to policies that unleash smart energy solutions, the Biden+Harris administration has implemented policies that are re-shoring manufacturing, including in the all-important semiconductor sector, and that are ensuring the United States is thriving in the most important technologies and controlling associated supply chains.

Policy is fundamental to healthy outcomes in every regard, from economics and environment to education and healthcare. Since the Clean Coalition is a non-partisan organization, I will refrain from specifying candidates to support. On the other hand, I believe that the facts make some voting decisions as stark as the difference between an upstanding public prosecutor and a downright career criminal. I hope you will help everyone understand what is at stake in the coming election and encourage voters to ensure the United States is positioned to move forward.

Although there is much more that could be said, I want readers to get to the rest of the important content in this newsletter. Hence, without further adieu, please enjoy the Clean Coalition 3Q2024 highlights below, and as always...

Power On!

Decarbonize LA: Powering a Cleaner Future

The City of Los Angeles has set an ambitious goal: to be powered entirely by clean energy by 2035. Reaching this target requires more than just aspiration. It demands specificity, measurability, and strategic planning. Enter the Decarbonize LA initiative, a collaborative effort designed to inform and accelerate Los Angeles’ clean energy ambitions. Spearheading this initiative is a partnership between the Clean Coalition and The Permacity Foundation, an LA-based nonprofit. The mission of Decarbonize LA is to provide technical recommendations which will help to accelerate Los Angeles’ decarbonization efforts, maximizing impact in the shortest possible time frame.

Non-Energy Benefits: The True Value of Distributed Generation

As California continues its clean energy transition, it is crucial that Non-Energy Benefits (NEBs) and social costs are fully taken into account by both the California Energy Commission (CEC) and the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) when making cost-effective resource planning and investment decisions (RPI Decisions). NEBs and social costs include all externalities of energy production, both positive and negative. Positive externalities of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) include resilience and lower land-use, while negative externalities of fossil fuel resources include polluted water sources and poor air quality.
