OUR MISSION:

To Enrich the Health and Lives

of the People We Serve

KSNT

This was the headline late last week as the St. Francis Campus was hit with a ransomware attack through its partner, Ardent Health Services. The attack on Ardent affected 30 hospitals in 6 states! Hospital emergency rooms are on diversion; non-emergent surgeries have been cancelled; all charting is now done with pen and paper; Stormont is deploying additional staffing to handle the increase in visits they are experiencingLife at the University of Kansas – St Francis campus will not be the same for quite some time!

Every day we talk about the need to be endlessly vigilant with our hospital network and internet. Dom and his IT team regularly sends out phishing tests and provides training to help us all understand what a suspicious e-mail looks like. Every month, at our managers meeting he goes over the charts and statistics of how many phishing tests were sent – and how many were clicked on. We spend a lot of time creating new banners in our e-mail system to alert our associates that the message is not coming from CHCS although it says it is.

Yet, despite all of this, every month we have associates clicking on these test emails and opening attachments or links. If it were a real attack, our entire system would be in jeopardy!

My plea is that we all be extremely careful with our e-mail system! If the e-mail says it’s from CHCS and you see the banner telling you it’s not – It’s not from CHCS. Do not open links or attachments through your phone or computer. It’s particularly difficult to spot malware on your phone. And finally, if you have any questions or concerns call Dom and his team. I regularly call them concerning a questionable e-mail. Sometimes it just doesn’t look right. And although 9 times out of 10 it’s not an issue, they’ve always been helpful and glad I called.

This ransomware attack happened in our back yard to a hospital we all know and respect. Let’s do everything we can to make sure it’s not CHCS the next time.

CHCS associates Manda Thompson and Brenda Quigley recently wrapped -up their six-session teen Mental Health First Aid course with Centralia juniors and sophomores. Thanks to both for teaching this valuable training! And thanks to the Centralia administration and staff for their support! Since Brenda could not make the last session, she made cookies for the students!

Rempe to Join

CHCS Full-Time

We are happy to announce Amanda Rempe, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, will be joining the staff at the Onaga and Westmoreland Clinics full-time. Amanda has been on staff as a PRN provider for the past few years, but beginning mid-December, she will work in our Onaga Clinic on Mondays and in our Westmoreland Clinic on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

“We are excited Amanda has decided to join our organization as a full-time nurse practitioner,” said Merica Surdez, CHCS Chief of Provider and Clinic Operations. “Throughout her nursing career, Amanda has been a part of our CHCS family. Joining us now as a full-time APRN has a feeling of her returning home. It is always a win for CHCS and our communities when we are able to recruit and retain local providers. With these roots, they understand our unique needs and are committed to serving our rural communities long-term. Amanda’s familiarity with CHCS will allow for a seamless transition into each of these clinics.”

Amanda graduated from Washburn University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing in December 2015. She briefly worked in the Stormont Vail emergency department as a Registered Nurse before returning to Community HealthCare System and working in the hospital’s acute nursing department for 6 years. She later decided to pursue her Doctorate of Nursing Practice degree, which she earned from Washburn University in 2021.

Rempe noted deciding to join CHCS full-time was easy. “I have doctored with Community Healthcare System since birth. I love our tight knit community. I became a Nurse Practitioner to improve the lives and overall health of the community that my friends and family will be nurtured and cultivated in,” she said.

To Rempe the most rewarding aspect of practicing medicine is making an impactful difference in someone’s life and helping them take responsibility for their own health and well-being. “I want to make personal connections with my patients and help improve their overall quality of life. It is truly an honor to be trusted with guiding patients to make healthcare decisions based on their specific needs and wants,” she said.

In her spare time Rempe enjoys reading and spending time with family and friends. She and her husband have 5 children, ages 2 months to 6 years, and live outside of Frankfort. She has resided in the same rural community since birth and says, “I wouldn’t fathom raising my family anywhere else.

CHCS wants to help you ease the burden of student debt by partnering with TIAA to provide access to a new financial wellness tool and service that helps find the best federal repayment and forgiveness programs for your financial institution.

If currently under the public service loan forgiveness program, SAVI may have additional benefits for you. Please see Cindy for more information.

SAVI's main employee benefit is it helps borrowers understand options for lower payments and simplify the process, so employees have less paperwork responsibilities.

SAVI has two options for borrowers:

Workplace Violence Survey

We need your help! Please take a moment to complete the online Workplace Violence Survey.  It will only take a few minutes and your input is valued and can help identify issues that may otherwise go unnoticed or can lead to changes that improve safety.

We last surveyed employees in 2020 which indicated CHCS employees felt safe at work but given all that has transpired the past 3 years, we want to get updated data.

Paper surveys will not be provided! If you have any questions, you can reach out to Christina Hasenkamp!
