March 10, 2020

Dear Students,

Due to the rapidly changing situation with COVID-19, CIM has decided, out of an abundance of caution and in conjunction with CWRU, to:

  1. Extend spring break for students until March 18 and
  2. Limit in-person instruction until at least Monday, April 6, 2020.

Events that are still permitted are:

  • Lessons – If you and your teacher are symptom-free and comfortable with meeting, you may have lessons in person.
  • Chamber/Coachings – If you and the members of your chamber ensemble are symptom-free and comfortable with meeting, you may rehearse and have coachings in person.
  • Recitals – If symptom-free, students may perform their degree recitals, with only your family and teacher in attendance; recitals will be livestreamed. Students with degree recitals scheduled will receive additional information about how to register family members planning to attend student recitals.

These in-person instructional events are strictly voluntary. If in-person teaching is not possible, CIM expects that lessons will be offered remotely by faculty.

CIM classes will be taught remotely through Microsoft Teams. Look for information from each of your instructors in the coming days. Classes will resume remotely on March 18. If you have concerns about accessing the internet and applications for remote instruction, please contact Dean Sweigart. You’ll receive separate information from CWRU with instructions on accessing your Case classes.

Large ensembles and performances will be suspended until such a time as we are able to resume in-person instruction.

At this point, the building will remain open for practice and the limited in-person instruction as planned. If any changes to building access are made, you will be notified. Please know that your student ID will be required to enter the building, and additional information about building access will be communicated as it becomes available.

If you are at home for spring break we encourage you to stay there if possible. If you can go home during this time and reliably access your online instruction, we would encourage you to do so. If you live in Cutter House now, you may stay on campus, and Leutner Commons will remain open. University Health and Counseling Services will remain operational and residence life staff will be present. More detailed information will be sent to all Cutter House residents.

Throughout this process, we will be requesting our community members to follow the guidelines from CWRU:

  1. Self-observation for fever, cough or difficulty breathing.
  2. Students who experience any symptoms should contact University Health Services at 216.368.2450 or your primary care provider, where a health professional will discuss your situation and provide guidance.
  3. Avoid sharing food or drink with others (e.g., eating or drinking from the same plates or containers).
  4. Avoid close contact with others – e.g., shaking hands, hugs, etc.

Our primary goal is to ensure the health and safety of our community, and we hope that by doing this we can mitigate widespread impact.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation during this difficult time.

Deans Judy Bundra, Brian Sweigart and David Gilson
