Important Changes to Counseling Licensure
Dear School Counselor,

The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs has recently released the updated rules for counseling licensure.  One of the changes that will impact school counselors is that the LLPC (limited license) can be now only be renewed annually for a maximum period of 10 years (R 338.1754).  In the past, there was no limit on the amount of years a counselor could work with a limited license. This change took effect January 1, 2012.

Many school counselors receive LLPC licensure upon completion of their master's degree, but never seek out the required supervision needed to receive the full licensure, or LPC, because this license is not required in order to work in the school setting.

One of the main benefits of having the LLPC or LPC in addition to the School Counselor License (SCL) or NT endorsement on a teaching certificate is the ability work as a counselor in other settings such as a community college, community agency, or private practice, should the need or desire arise.  The economic climate in Michigan and the changes the State has forced upon public schools mean that no job is truly safe.  With the increasing threats of privatization, layoffs, and elimination of positions, it is essential LLPCs do not let their licensure expire.

In order to receive the full license, LLPCs must complete 100 hours of supervision with an LPC who has had training in the function of supervision and has worked at least 3 years as a counselor (R 338.1757).

I am proud to provide supervision services specifically for school counselors who wish to pursue the LPC.  I have worked as a school counselor for over 5 years and have been providing supervision services for the past year.  I was trained in supervision at Oakland University in July 2010 by Dr. Elyce Cron.  I provide supervision services to individuals and groups.

I am happy to answer any questions you have regarding your licensure or my services.

Sincerely,
