Don't you miss the Whelden FRIENDS Bookstore? We sure do! But, during our curbside pickup hours, you can still buy a book from the back porch "bookstore". There will be an envelope for honor system payments. Look for the cart, weather permitting. We regularly put out more books to refresh the selection!

37 Picture Books That Celebrate #BlackJoy | Summer Reading 2020
"There is
danger in a single story: Rich, multifaceted cultures, communities, and individuals are flattened into a monolith. Likewise, the Black experience is not defined by suffering. In A Burst of Light: and Other Essays, Audre Lorde wrote, "Caring for myself is not self-indulgence. It is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare." When living in an oppressive society that protects and upholds white supremacy, joy can be a radical act, a reclamation of autonomy. These picture books, with their exuberant illustrations and positive prose, offer portraits of Black joy, within and beyond the African diaspora."

FYI - Barnstable Public Schools Summer Reading
(Grades K-5) is focused on the Community Read
of "
Fish
In A
Tree
" by Lynda Mullaly Hunt. Use it as a "listening" comprehension resource for grades K-2 and we encourage our families to read this together. Chapters 1-20 are read before the end of the school year and then continue to read throughout the summer.
Check out this video which shows the dedication of the schools and how they prepared 2,800 books to be given to the children!
