City of Edinburg Mayor Omar Ochoa visited the UTRGV School of Medicine to learn more about the school’s mission and ongoing initiatives.

During his visit, he met with Dr. Guy Bailey, School of Medicine leadership and medical students Daniel Ledezma, Sean Corcoran and Michelle Nwaeri to discuss medical education, community impact and the future of health care in the Rio Grande Valley.

Cancer's new editorial board member

Dr. Subhash C. Chauhan, professor, division chief of the Cancer Immunology and Microbiology and founding director of the South Texas Center of Excellence in Cancer Research, has been elected to the Editorial Board of Cancers, a peer-reviewed international journal.

He joins seven scholars appointed in January 2026 to help guide the journal's scientific direction. Dr. Chauhan's research focuses on cancer diagnosis and treatment, molecular therapeutics, immunotherapy, nanomedicine and early cancer detection.

His appointment strengthens the School of Medicine's cancer research program and increases its national and international visibility.

Eighth Annual Education Collaboration for Aspiring Health Professionals (ECAHP) Competition

The UTRGV School of Medicine Area Health Education Center hosted the eighth annual Education Collaboration for Aspiring Health Professionals Competition, welcoming high school students from across the Rio Grande Valley for a day focused on public health, teamwork and innovation.

Through complex case scenarios that integrated clinical and community health factors, students strengthened skills in interdisciplinary thinking, communication and critical analysis. Participating schools included South Texas ISD Health Professions, South Texas ISD Medical Professions, South Texas ISD Science Academy, UTRGV Edinburg CISD Collegiate High, IDEA Quest and Veterans Memorial Early College High School.

The competition was led by AHEC under the direction of Dr. LuBeth Pérez, with program coordination by Miguel Jimenez, and supported by dedicated UTRGV medical student mentors. The annual event continues to highlight the power of collaboration in preparing the next generation of health professionals in South Texas.

UT Health RGV at UTRGV Dye Hard Orange

UT Health RGV provided first-aid coverage during the UTRGV Dye Hard Orange 10K/5K/1-Mile Anniversary Run on Feb. 7 at the School of Medicine in Harlingen, reinforcing its commitment to community health and safety. Team members also joined in cheering on participants, reflecting the organization’s ongoing dedication to wellness and engagement across the Rio Grande Valley.

Dr. Uvaldo Cantu has joined the UTRGV School of Medicine as an assistant professor and OB/GYN clerkship director. He earned his medical degree from UT Southwestern and completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University after receiving his bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University.

Board-certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Cantu serves the communities of Harlingen and Weslaco and is a member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American College of Surgeons.

Students strengthened their communication skills while learning more about each profession’s role and how they work together to support patient care.

The event highlights the importance of teamwork in healthcare, helping future providers deliver more coordinated, holistic care and ultimately improve patient outcomes.
