Dear Friends,
Last night the Board of Directors unanimously passed the congregational position statement, “Repairing our World - Protect the Planet.”
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED: Compelled by our Jewish values, our history, the urgency of the climate crisis, and our 2023 Strategic Plan, Mount Zion Temple resolves to confront the climate crisis and do the following:
- Cultivate resilient spirits as we respond to the climate crisis.
- Establish sustainability practices for our building, grounds, and programs.
- Educate and advocate.
A new committee of the Board, “Protecting the Planet / Bal Tashchit Committee,” will oversee the implementation of these commitments over the years of our Strategic Plan and beyond as guided by this congregational position statement. The President will appoint Board members and congregants with expertise and passion to this committee.
The process of writing this statement began last August and included two Town Hall Meetings, online feedback, a post-Shabbat service discussion, and more. Over 163 people have shared their views and edits. All of this was guided by a working group chaired by Michael Kuhne. We are indebted to him and the group members: Hella Bloom Cohen, Siana Goodwin, Victoria Lincourt, Rabbi Heather Renetzky, Georgia Ross, Dan Schibel, Jennifer Schneider, Rabbi Adam Stock Spilker, and Chad Weinstein.
As we agreed to do in our Strategic Plan, we are finding the place that we as a synagogue can hold at this moment. We pray it will make a difference and trust it will.
