COVID19: Letter Regarding Furlough Week
Following you will find helpful information on accessing Unemployment Insurance Benefits in North Carolina to help cover some of your income during the Furlough week beginning on 3/30/2020.

If you are affected by the Furlough week starting 3/30/2020, your Human Resources department will file your unemployment claim for you.

If you are out of work on FMLA, you are not eligible for unemployment benefits, unless it is FMLA directly related to a COVID-19 diagnosis. If this applies to you, please speak with your HR representative if you have questions.

Although we will file the claim for you, you will need to create a user account so that the Unemployment Office can send the funds to you in the manner you prefer. (Direct Deposit into your check account will be the fastest way, but they also have the option of mailing a re-loadable Debit Card).

Creating an Online Account for Claimants
This video gives a quick one minute tutorial on creating your claimant account.
Step 2:
Don't forget, we will file the unemployment claim for you, so you can skip the "Apply for Unemployment" part.

We will file your claim for unemployment at the end of day on Friday, 3/27.

You should be able to check the status of your claim by logging into your User Account as early as Monday, 3/30 or Tuesday, 3/31. NC's Unemployment System is processing a record numbers of applicants. Please be patient if you have to try a few times to check or if there are delays beyond your (or our) control.

Payments for unemployment claims, if approved, are typically generated 10 days after submission/approval by your employer, however, could be delayed due to the high volume of applications.

You can check your payment/unemployment claim status at: www.des.nc.gov
Step 3:
Check Your Claim Status & Add Direct Deposit Info

Starting next Monday (3/30) or Tuesday (3/31) (after your unemployment claim has been filed by your employer), you can check the status of your claim.

To do this, log into your Online Account at www.des.nc.gov.

At that point, you will be able add your Checking Account for Direct Deposit, as well as complete any other information DES needs to approve your claim.

If you do not add the Direct Deposit information, a Bank of America Debit card will be mailed to the address you entered when you set up your Online Account.

You can check your unemployment claim status at: www.des.nc.gov

Does receiving Social Security retirement benefits affect my Unemployment benefits?
Social Security retirement benefits do not reduce the amount of your weekly payment amount. You are not required to report Social Security retirement benefits.

Are my benefits taxable and does Division of Employment Security (DES) withhold any benefits for taxes?
Yes. You should include the UI payments you received on your federal and state tax filing form. If you request it, DES will withhold state and federal taxes from your benefits.

How is my weekly benefit amount determined?
Your weekly benefit amount is the amount of money you may receive each week. This is calculated by dividing your total of wages in the last two quarters by 52. That number is then rounded to the next lower whole dollar. In order to receive a payment, the total must equal to or exceed $15. The exact amount of benefits and the length of time that you may get benefits cannot be determined until you actually file your claim for benefits.

What are wages?
Wages are cash or any medium other than cash paid by an employer to, or on behalf of an employee for services rendered.

What if I work part-time for another employer?
You are responsible for providing the NC Division of Employment Security any other wages you earn during an unemployment period. After your unemployment claim is submitted and is in process, you will need to log back into your account and list any other employer information and your weekly earnings from there.
