Under state and federal law, a child’s caregiver in a child welfare case has the right to receive 10 days' notice of court hearing dates, and if present at a hearing, the caregiver must have an opportunity to provide information to the court about the child. However, many caregivers are not aware that they can attend court or do not know what to expect when they come to court.
In response, the Children’s Commission Caregiver Notice Workgroup developed a one-page checklist to share information and tips with caregivers about court hearings. The checklist includes important dates and key contacts, what to expect before court and at court, what to discuss with the caseworker or the child’s attorney, suggested attire, tips if the caregiver is asked to speak, and guidance for virtual hearings.
This resource is now available on the Children’s Commission website. Please share widely with foster parents, preadoptive parents, kinship caregivers, and group home or residential care staff.
