The Children's Commission has rescheduled the webinar entitled “Navigating the Transition from Trial to Appellate Counsel” to Friday, February 9, 2024, from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.

The webinar will feature a panel discussion of the obligations and duties of a trial attorney post-judgement and how to provide a smooth and successful handoff from trial to appellate counsel. Panelists include:

• Mark Briggs, Attorney at Law and Child Welfare Law Mediator;
• Michael Hull, Assistant County Attorney at the Harris County Attorney’s Office Appellate Division; and
• Lauren James, Chambers Attorney for the Texas First Court of Appeals.

The webinar has been approved for 1.0 hour of MCLE credit and 1.0 hour of TBLS certification hours in the specialty field of Child Welfare Law. This presentation will be archived and materials will be made available on the Children’s Commission website following the live webinar.

The Children's Commission will host a webinar on Thursday, March 7, 2024, from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. entitled “Trial Skills for Child Welfare Cases: Making and Responding to Objections.” 

The presenters will be Children’s Commission Trial Skills Training faculty members Rob Galvin, Attorney at Law and William “Drake” Mikeska, Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) Managing Attorney for DFPS Region 8. The webinar will include a discussion about the importance of making proper objections (including when and how to object), how to respond to an objection, and what to do when an objection is sustained. The webinar will also include tips on preserving the record for appeal.

MCLE and TBLS credit for this course is currently pending. This presentation will be archived and materials will be made available on the Children’s Commission website following the live webinar.
