Resource Letter:

For Judges and Attorneys Handling Child Welfare Cases

April 10, 2025

Child Abuse Prevention Month

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month and offers an opportunity to provide resources for strengthening support for families. Judges and attorneys, as well as families and community members, can help prevent child abuse and neglect.

The Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) provides a social media toolkit on Child Abuse Prevention with tips and resources that can be shared to promote prevention practices. Texas Health and Human Services (HHS) Family Support Services programs promote healthy families, including Get Parenting Tips.com which offers guidance on topics for all age groups from infants to 18 years and a hotline to help direct families to resources. The Children’s Bureau has English and Spanish Protective Factors Conversation Guides for professionals and caregivers on nurturing and attachment; knowledge of parenting; parental resilience; social connection; concrete support; and social-emotional competence.

Other resources that may be useful for judges and attorneys to reference and share are listed below:

By utilizing resources and spreading awareness, everyone can help prevent child abuse and encourage families to thrive within their communities.
