Representing Children with Intellectual

and Developmental Disabilities in Child Welfare Cases

The Children’s Commission will host a webinar on Friday, May 30, 2025, from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. entitled “Representing Children with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities in Child Welfare Cases.” Speakers will discuss the diagnosis, testing, and treatment for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and considerations for judges and attorneys in child welfare cases.


Panelists for this webinar are:

  • Dr. Mackenzie Hughes, Clinical Psychologist and Assistant Professor, Texas Children’s Hospital;
  • Dr. Casey Swick, Pediatric Neuropsychologist, Texas Children’s Hospital; and
  • Kate Black, Attorney, Disability Rights Texas.


MCLE and TBLS credit will be requested. This presentation will be archived, and materials will be available on the Children’s Commission website following the live webinar.

Utilizing Day Care to Support Children and Families

A recording of the Tuesday, April 29, 2025, live webinar entitled “Utilizing Day Care to Support Children and Families,” and PowerPoint presentation are now available on the Children’s Commission’s On-Demand Training and MCLE webpage.


Carol Morin, DFPS Day Care Program Director; Jennifer Cochran-Green, DFPS Managing Attorney for Regions 4 and 7; and Julie Rivera, Program Director of Child Care Services Workforce Solutions Capital Area, discussed how daycare services can support biological, kinship, and foster families and encourage child safety in various stages of a child welfare case, including prevention efforts. The webinar addressed policies and procedures as they relate to day care and funding; the role and duties of the DFPS day care coordinators; and practice tips for judges and lawyers.


The State Bar of Texas approved 1.0 hour of MCLE for the webinar, and the Texas Board of Legal Specialization approved 1.0 hour for certification and recertification in specialty fields of Child Welfare and Family Law.
