Important Information for Parents
of Juniors and Seniors
Dear Parents of Juniors and Seniors,

Welcome to a new and exciting semester. The Junior/Senior newsletter is published in September, October, February, and Early Spring. This information will also be kept on our website. We look forward to this journey with your son or daughter as we navigate through the college and career process. Whether this is your first child or your 7th, there are many changes. We will be keeping updates posted on the website and hosting virtual parent nights.

This newsletter has been archived in the Grade 12 and Grade 11 sections of the College Prep Resources page of BK.org.

If you have questions about graduation, please contact Mrs. Herrera, Vice Principal of Academic Affairs at sherrera@bk.org or (208) 375-6010. If you have questions about college please contact Mrs. Klover, College and Career Counselor at jklover@bk.org.

Graduation with Honors
Honors are determined by the weighted GPA calculated after seniors' 7th semester of high school. Class rank and GPA are available after January 29, 2021.

Honor cords will be included in the cap and gown package for qualifying students.

Summa Cum Laude: Students with a transcript weighted GPA of 4.0 or higher.
Designated by a gold honor cord at graduation

Magna Cum Laude: Students with a transcript weighted GPA of 3.75 - 3.99.
Designated by a white honor cord at graduation

National Honor Society - Members of the National Honor Society that have completed tutoring hours will have blue and gold cords at graduation. NHS cords may have an additional cost of $8.00. This cost has typically been covered by the club, final cost will be determined based on club balance.
Cap and Gown
Just a reminder that all students have already ordered their cap and gown. The cost was included in their senior fees paid last Fall.

Transcripts are currently available on Infinite Campus under “Documents”.

Scholarships Awarded
As students receive notification of scholarships, please send a copy of the award letter to kshockey@bk.org. We will use this information to compile for graduation. Please submit all awards, regardless of the student’s final college selection.

Why is scholarship information important, and how is it used?
We list all the scholarships our students have been offered with the student’s name (no amounts are listed) in the graduation program. This is how we publicly recognize the students for their achievements and it is a tribute to them, It also helps raise a certain degree of awareness regarding where our students have been accepted and the types of scholarships that are available to students.

Class of 2021 Seniors - Technology Checklist
Seniors, please make sure you are checking your email regularly for information from colleges. When we work with seniors we occasionally find unopened email with information on setting up a school account, housing details, financial aid and more. It is a good idea to look in your spam file as things sometimes go there even if you have other emails from that school.

As you transition to College, a few “housekeeping” items need to be completed. In June, you will no longer have any access to your BK email account or your Google drive.

  • Create a non-BK email account (if you don’t already have one)
  • Go to your College Board account and switch your email to a non-BK account
  • Go to your ACT account and switch your email to a non-BK account
  • Double check all college or university accounts - Colleges typically email letters to you through their organizational account. Make sure you follow all instructions that have been sent to you by the colleges for setting up these accounts. Please check these accounts regularly for information about admissions, financial aid, housing and more.
  • Keep your accounts and passwords in a safe location and share with an adult
  • Open your BK drive - copy or share important papers, letters, and other information you would like to save. Share with your new email account.
  • Take time to clean up your computer. Organize your files and save what needs to be saved
  • Check your spam or junk folders for correspondence from colleges.

If you have problems figuring out how to set up a college account, please see your counselor or Ms. Klover in Room 406. It is best to use a non-BK email account for all correspondence with colleges.

After making your final college decision, remember to contact all schools you have been admitted to thanking them and letting them know you have decided to enroll elsewhere.

Seniors, You’ve Been Accepted Early Decision (ED) or Early Action (EA). What’s Next?
Read this timely and helpful article on SCOIR.com to understand your responsibilities during this stage of the admission process.

Update the “My Colleges” section on Scoir. Accurately record the colleges you have applied to, and the admissions decision (if you have heard back from them). If you have made your final decision, please note that. Having accurate information on this website is important for your counselor to accurately track your records. It also gives the school helpful data with regards to where Bishop Kelly students are applying. Ms. Klover has been receiving scholarship opportunities to various colleges and having your Scoir college application list updated allows her to know who to share this scholarship information with.
