Important Information for Parents
of Juniors and Seniors
Dear Parents of Juniors and Seniors,

Welcome to a new and exciting school year. The Junior/Senior newsletter is published in September, October, December, and Early Spring. This information will also be kept on our website. We look forward to this journey with your son or daughter as we navigate through the college and career process. Whether this is your first child or your 7th, there are many changes. We will be keeping updates posted on the website and hosting virtual parent nights.

This newsletter has been archived in the Grade 12 and Grade 11 sections of the College Prep Resources page of BK.org.

If you have questions, please contact Mrs. Herrera, Vice Principal of Academic Affairs at sherrera@bk.org or (208) 375-6010.
Yearbooks and Senior Tux and Drape Photos
Parker Portraits will be on campus to take student photos on Thursday, October 15th and Friday, October 16th. Pictures for juniors, and seniors (just for ID card purposes--this is NOT the tux/drape photo) will be taken in your student's theology and government class. If you would like to order photos, the process is entirely online this year.

Earlybird Pricing for Senior Ads in the Yearbook Also Ends Soon!
The early bird pricing deadline for a senior ad in the yearbook is quickly approaching. October 15th is the deadline for a discounted price, and the regular deadline is November 12th. Don't miss this opportunity to send off your senior with a few special words and photos. The ads are built primarily online, and it's a simple process. For more information, see THIS FLYER and/or visit The Yearbook Company website.

Update on Senior Tux and Drape Photos
We've had to make some changes to the on-campus option for senior tux and drape photos. Because of a few issues with the photographer and sharing the tuxes and drapes, we've had to change this to an off-campus activity. However, we have a few photographers who have been contacted and are willing to work with BK families to offer this photo on the same scheduled day (October 14th) at their studio and for a very discounted price. Please see THIS BLOG POST for specific information and who you should contact.

The most important thing is to know that you or your Senior will need to contact the photographer to schedule the time slot--this is not a walk-in appointment.

Please contact them as soon as possible so you can get scheduled. Photos are due by November 30th, whether you are using your own photographer or one of the ones listed on the flyer.

Senior Quotes
Senior quotes need to be submitted by November 30th. A link to the Google Form will also be sent out in September. The students will be reminded of this once we get closer to the date, and we will be asking for those submissions to be sent electronically via the Google Form.

Senior Parent College Information Knight
If you were unable to attend our college information night, we’ve included the presentation and video here. Please contact your student’s counselor or Julie Klover, our College and Career Counselor with any questions.

Apply Idaho Info for Seniors
Seniors will be able to create an account and log into Apply Idaho to see which Idaho colleges and/or universities they have been pre-accepted to based on their GPA. Students will still need to apply to those schools through the Apply Idaho application, or the school’s individual application. All Idaho schools have waived their application fee for Idaho high school students. This is a great opportunity to apply to one or more of the fine academic institutions in our state. We encourage all students to take advantage of the Apply Idaho application. Use this APPLY IDAHO LINK to watch a video explaining the process.
Senior College Application Blitz
On Wednesday, October 14, seniors will have a great opportunity to work on their college applications.

While this is technically a day off of school for them, we strongly encourage Seniors to come work on college applications that morning!

Counselors will have your EdUID, which has been assigned by the state and is needed to complete the Apply Idaho application. We can also help with Common App and other general college application questions. Senior English teachers will be available to help with essay proofreading. This is a great opportunity for seniors to get a head start (or complete) their college application process, so we hope to have a big crowd show up.

College Visits
The best way to learn more about a school is to visit their campus. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 concerns, many but not all, colleges are opting for virtual visits instead of in-person visits. Please confirm the college you are interested in allows for in-person visits. Bishop Kelly allows students excused College Visit absences so they can check out a campus. Juniors and seniors are allowed five excused college visits per year.
Bishop Kelly Virtual College Visits
There will be multiple individual virtual college visits during lunches on both A and B days as well as office hours on B days. Students, please check SCOIR.com for the most up to date information. A weekly college event list will also be sent out each week in BK Alive.
College Fairs and Visits
he NACAC has canceled all in person college fairs this Fall and has opted for multiple National virtual fairs. You will have the opportunity to connect with more than 600 colleges and universities on each of these dates this fall. Click to see the list of exhibiting colleges.

Monday, Oct. 12 from 1 - 9 p.m. ET
Sunday, Oct. 18 from 12 - 8 p.m. ET
Sunday, Nov. 8 from 2 - 10 p.m. ET

Each virtual fair is a free, one-day event. Attend as often as you like. Parents invited, too. Sign up at virtualcollegefairs.org

FAFSA and CSS Profile
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application window opened October 1st, 2020 for current seniors  planning on attending post secondary education opportunities in the fall of 2021. Some aid is based on a first come first served basis so we encourage you to complete the FAFSA early. The head of household filing taxes as well as the student applying for Federal Student Aid both need an individual FSA ID prior to completing the FAFSA . For more information about the FAFSA refer to this guide How to apply for FAFSA and Federal Student Aid: Everything You Need to Know or contact Ms. Klover, our College and Career Counselor. Some schools also require the CSS Profile as a part of their financial aid application. This allows the colleges to look at other information that is not available on the FAFSA in an effort to obtain the best financial aid package for your student. Use this link to determine if the school you are applying to requires the CSS profile.
PSAT Information
The PSAT scheduled for October 14th, has been rescheduled for January 26th, 2021. All sophomores and juniors will take the test on that date.

This exam will be administered at Bishop Kelly. Study guides, including practice tests, are available in room 710. Students will be instructed to set up accounts with both College Board and Khan Academy so they can do additional test preparation. https://www.khanacademy.org/sat is a great way for juniors to link their sophomore PSAT test results for personalized OFFICIAL SAT practice with Khan Academy. If you do not have a prior PSAT test experience, you can still create an account for official PSAT/SAT test prep using the link above. Here is a helpful short video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iz7Odl6e8EI

Official full length practice PSAT/SAT tests can also be found on the SAT suite of assessments webpage https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/psat-nmsqt-psat-10/practice

AP Exams
College Board has made improvements to the student experience for AP students, and you as parents should be aware of these changes. Your student will automatically be registered for the exam for each AP course they are enrolled in unless an opt-out form is completed. The AP exam Opt-Out form can be found at this link. Your student’s Bishop Kelly account will be billed $95 per exam ($143 per exam for AP Capstone - AP Seminar or AP Research). There are substantial fees imposed by the College Board for late orders. You may find the AP credit acceptance policy for various colleges and universities by following this link.

Please contact Chrissy Kane (ckane@bk.org) if you have questions.
