Important Information for Parents

There is so much to do in your student's last two years of high school. From college visits to graduation preparations, the added to-do items can be overwhelming. We hope to create a quarterly newsletter that puts all the information you need in one place so that you can reference it all year long.

This newsletter has been archived in the Grade 12 and Grade 11 sections of the Counseling and College Preparedness page of

If you have questions, please contact Mrs. Herrera, Vice Principal of Academic Affairs at or (208) 375-6010.

Senior Picture Information:
If you are using your own, independent photographer, Senior tux/drape pictures need to be submitted to the yearbook staff by NOVEMBER 30th . Please download and print THIS SPECIFICATIONS SHEET and give it to your photographer so that they have the size requirements and how photos should be submitted.

Bishop Kelly is offering a sitting for seniors to take a tux/drape picture at BK with Parker Portraits. The sitting fee is $10 payable to Parker Portraits. date is October 30, 2019 from 8:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. . This is a day with no scheduled classes, so students will need to sign up on a Google Form. The link will be sent to seniors soon, and students must sign up by October 15th. Time slots will be given to students in advance, and they will be determined by the order in which people are signed up.

A few weeks after the sitting, you will receive a proof sheet with two pose options to choose from. If you don’t like either photo, you can certainly use your own photographer. There will be additional costs if you decide to order prints of your tux/drape photos. Parker Portraits will submit the picture directly to Bishop Kelly.
Senior Quotes
Need to be submitted by November 30th. The students will be submitting their quotes via a Google Form that will be sent out later this month. Students will be reminded of this once we get closer to the date.
Order Your Yearbook Through October 11th

Senior College Planning Information
College and Career Counseling
Mrs. Crum is our College and Career Counselor. She is available to help all students and parents. If you and/or your student would like help with the college application process, or your have specific questions, please contact her at . She is also interested in setting up some career lunch discussions, so if you would be interested in talking about your career with interested students, she would love to hear from you.

Senior Classroom Visit
Mrs. Crum met with Mr. McCormick's American Government classes on Friday, August 30, and with Mr. Vreeland's Government classes on Friday, September 6th. She went over the College Application Process and gave guidelines to help Seniors with this important transition. Please go over the application guidelines with your senior so that you are familiar with our process and timeline. Mrs. Crum can meet individually with any seniors who were absent on those days.

Senior Parent College Information Nights
This information session will be held on Monday, October 7th at 6:30 p.m. in the Fraser Library. All parents are encouraged to attend, and seniors are also welcome.

This year , in addition to the information presented by the counseling staff, we are pleased to have Peter Lien from the University of Idaho join us to discuss the financial aid process. Peter has been working in higher education for over 10 years as the Director of Admissions and/or Recruitment at public and private schools in two states (MN and ID). He has extensive experience with the Financial Aid process, filing FAFSA’s, verification, and helping families understand how to pay for college. He has sat on multiple scholarship committees and has experience working with student athletes on NCAA eligibility and compliance.

College Application Blitz
On Wednesday, October 30 , the counselors and some English teachers will be available in the Wilson Commons from 9am - 11am to help students with their applications. All parents and seniors will receive a letter from the State Board of Education with details about applying to the Idaho colleges and universities through the Apply Idaho initiative. Seniors planning to apply using the Apply Idaho application will need to bring their social security numbers (necessary to receive financial aid).

Application fees have been waived by all Idaho colleges and universities with the Apply Idaho application or their own university’s application. A link to the Apply Idaho application, as well as instructional videos can be found on the Next Steps website. . If you plan to apply to an Idaho school prior to October 1, 2019, you will need to apply through the specific university’s website.

The counselors will be available to help students with other non-Idaho applications, essays, and general college application questions. This is a great opportunity for seniors to get a head start (or complete) their college application process, so we hope to have a big crowd show up for the morning.

Boise National College Fair
The annual National College Fair will be held at Expo Idaho on Wednesday, October 30 . This is a busy day at Bishop Kelly, but all students will be able to attend sessions during the day. Seniors may go after stopping by the College Application Blitz, while juniors and sophomores can stop by after PSAT testing (Session closes at 2pm). There is an evening session from 6-8pm, and this is a great time to visit. There are fewer participants and college reps have more time for individual conversations. Students must sign up for a barcode in advance. Taking time to register for a barcode will allow you to visit with the reps rather than fill out information cards.

FAFSA and CSS Profile
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application window opens October 1st, 2019 for current seniors and parents planning on attending post secondary education opportunities in the fall of 2020. Some aid is based on a first come first served basis. We encourage you to complete the FAFSA early. The head of household filing taxes as well as the student applying for Federal Student Aid both need individual FSA ID’s prior to completing the FAFSA. You can register for your FSA ID at and you can complete the FAFSA at You will need a copy of your 2018 tax records to complete the FAFSA. Some schools also require the CSS Profile ( ) as a part of their financial aid application. This allows the colleges to look at other information that is not available on the FAFSA in an effort to obtain the best financial aid package for your student.

College Visits
The best way to learn more about a school is to visit their campus. Bishop Kelly allows students excused College Visit absences so they can check out a campus. Forms are available from Mrs. Kelly, from any of the counselors, or from the Counseling page of the BK website. In addition, a large number of schools come to Bishop Kelly to meet with interested students. Juniors and Seniors may attend five of these visits per year. The list of schools is constantly changing, so please check this link for an updated list of colleges coming to our campus.
