This morning the village released a statement indicating that the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was operating in the Village of Pleasantville to locate a specific individual with a criminal warrant. Based on what is happening locally, it seems the current focus of ICE is to find people that have a criminal record.
Nonetheless, I wanted to inform you that the school district has been preparing for any interactions that may occur with ICE officials. Last week the State Education Department, in collaboration with the offices of Governor Hochul and Attorney General James, reaffirmed their steadfast commitment to maintaining New York's schools as safe havens where all students are free to learn. They provided New York State Guidance on Safeguarding the Rights of Immigrant Students. In short, New York State law guarantees every student, regardless of citizenship or immigration status, the fundamental right to a free public education.
It is most important that all families understand that the Pleasantville UFSD will be following the Guidance provided by the Governor and Attorney General. Any requests for information or access to students will be evaluated in accordance with the law, regulation and policy by my office.
Please do not hesitate to contact me or any administrator with any questions that may arise.
For the youth,
Dr. DeSa
