Hello!! I hope the last few months have been great for you, and your family, with the health of everyone being a priority! As we approach the holiday and election season, we see many attempts for family health to be kept out of the front of our thoughts!
We do continue to see headlines that target our kids for simply being kids. One area that continues to draw our focus is the fairly new concentration on gender care. Parents and medical professionals are assisting children 'transitioning' from their God-given gender at birth to something they more closely identify with.
North Carolina hospitals have established 'Gender Care' programs. Most programs function through multiple specialties. Specialties include, but are certainly not limited to, endocrinologists, gynecologists, fertility specialists, urologists, psychologists, social workers, and many more.
While NC hospital programs do not currently go as far as other states to perform hysterectomies on minors1, they still offer hormone suppression therapies to delay puberty in 16 and younger. Once kids reach 18, they can pursue gender-affirming treatment/surgery options independently; this gets clouded if "medical necessity" is demonstrated.
There is also a valid concern that care can be sought and obtained through the many mental health options available directly to children, care without their parent's knowledge. "Child privacy and confidentiality" regulations are increasing. Every child that requires mental health treatment should have access to quality care. We must focus on the transparency of programs that hide behind psychological / school counseling services. These services have increased through federal covid funding. Once Medicaid expansion is accepted in NC, we will see another flood of financing for such programs. Look for details on this soon!
