For Your Viewing Pleasure

Enjoy some of these classic DVDs and many more this summer through our Books-to-Go service.
Available from the Easton Branch:

The Great Gatsby - This third film version of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic 1925 novel was one of the most hyped movies of the summer of 1974. Robert Redford stars as self-made millionaire Jay Gatsby, who uses his vast (and implicitly ill-gotten) fortune to buy his way into Long Island society. Most of all, Gatsby wants to win back the love of socialite Daisy Buchanan, now married to 'old money' Tom Buchanan.

Men in Black, International - The team has always protected the Earth from the scum of the universe, but in this new adventure, they tackle their biggest, most global threat to date: a mole in the organization.

Marshall - About a young Thurgood Marshall, the first African-American Supreme Court Justice, as he battles through one of his career defining cases.

Far From the Madding Crowd - Based on the literary classic by Thomas Hardy about Bathsheba Everdene who is an independent woman who attracts three different suitors: a sheep farmer; a dashing soldier; and a prosperous, older bachelor.

The Jungle Book - Mowgli is a boy who has been raised by wolves in the Indian jungle. When the wolves hear that the fierce man-hating tiger Shere Khan has returned, they decide to send Mowgli to a local "man tribe" for his own safety. With the help of Bagheera the wise panther and the happy-go-lucky bear Baloo, Mowgli meets and befriends many jungle animals as he makes his way to the village.

Emma - Twenty-one-year-old Emma Woodhouse loves playing matchmaker. When pretty and socially inferior Harriet arrives, Emma decides to indulge her passion. Against the advice of family friend and surrogate older brother Mr. Knightly, Emma persuades Harriet to reject a marriage proposal from a local farmer in order to hold out for an offer from the dashing Mr. Elton. But Emma soon discovers Mr. Elton's true motives and her advice to Harriet goes terribly awry.
Available from the St. Michaels branch:

Into the Woods - A modern twist on several of the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters' wishes and quests. This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel, all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife, their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch who has put a curse on them.

The Jackie Robinson Story - Jackie Robinson stars as himself in this inspirational classic. It chronicles his life, from youth, through his college career at UCLA, to his rise to legend with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Jackie triumphs over racial injustices and emerges as nothing less than one of America's true heroes.

Maltese Falcon - Detective Sam Spade goes in search of a priceless statuette after the death of his partner.

The Aristocats - In the heart of Paris, a kind and eccentric millionairess wills her entire estate to Duchess, her high-society cat. Duchess has three little kittens. A greedy, bumbling butler pulls off the ultimate catnap caper. Now it's up to the rough-and-tumble alley cat, Thomas O'Malley, and his band of swingin' jazz cats to save the day.

Happy Feet - Emperor Penguins from Antarctica each express their true love with a special heartsong of their own that expresses their very being. However, the misfit Mumble cannot sing. Instead he has an extraordinary talent to tap dance with almost magical energy and expression. Nevertheless, the leadership of the colony fearfully blames the young penguin's unorthodox ways for the lean fishing that threatens them all. Defiant in the face of unjust rejection, Mumble and his true friends set out to find the true cause of the famine. Through the friends trials and perils, Mumble learns many things about his frozen world, not the least of which being that his toe tapping talent may be what he needs to save his people.
