Dear NUNM Alumni,
We hope this message finds you well.
After careful consideration and extensive deliberation, the National University of Natural Medicine (NUNM) and Bastyr University have ended the discussions regarding a potential merger.
While both institutions have immense respect for one another, we believe at this time it is in the best interest of both communities to maintain our independent identities.
Please know that this decision was not made lightly and in no way diminishes the strong bond our institutions share. We remain committed to nurturing and strengthening our existing relationship, collaborating on potential shared initiatives, and continuing to rally behind our shared commitment to natural medicine education.
Your ongoing support means the world to us, and we look to the future with optimism and gratitude for the enduring partnership between our universities.
Warm regards,
Dr. Melanie Henriksen
FAQ: Conclusion of Merger Discussions
Q: Why isn’t the merger moving forward?
When we first announced the signing of a Letter of Intent (LOI), we were relatively early in the merger evaluation process. After ongoing Shared Governance work and thorough internal due diligence, we have reached the conclusion that a merger is not the best path forward at this time. This decision underscores our commitment to making intentional and responsible choices that align with the best interests of our community. We remain committed to transparency, thoughtful decision-making, and the long-term stability of our university.
Q: What factors were considered during the due diligence process?
The due diligence process involved a comprehensive review of institutional departments and programing, including academic compatibility, institutional culture, financial sustainability, and long-term strategic goals. Both institutions carefully evaluated these factors to make an informed decision that was best for their university.
Q: What impact will this decision have on the future of NUNM?
Both NUNM and Bastyr remain committed to their respective missions and will continue to focus on providing high-quality education, research, and healthcare services. The decision not to merge will not affect our dedication to excellence and commitment to serving our communities.
Q: Will there be financial impacts or changes in NUNM staffing due to this decision?
NUNM does not anticipate any changes in staffing resulting from this decision. At each step of the process, both NUNM and Bastyr have carefully assessed the financial aspects involved in either a merger completion or merger termination. While there were some costs associated with the due diligence process, there will be no adverse impacts to NUNM’s financial stability or operations. We are on track for a balanced budget, which includes moving forward with hiring for open positions and the continued search for our next campus location.
Q: How will this decision affect NUNM and Bastyr moving forward?
Both NUNM and Bastyr have deep respect and appreciation for our partnership. We will continue to pursue opportunities for collaboration between our universities in areas such as research, academic programs, and community outreach, fostering a positive relationship between our institutions.
NUNM will continue to operate independently, focusing on our core mission and strategic priorities. We remain dedicated to providing exceptional education, research, and healthcare services, and will explore new opportunities for growth and collaboration as they arise.
