The American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) announced this week a pilot program to assess the value and feasibility of a longitudinal assessment option to the 10-year secure examination. The pilot program will begin in January 2019 pending approval from the American Board of Medical Specialties' Committee on Continuing Certification in November.

Commission meetings, debates and presentations were part of the AAFP Congress of Delegates meeting, held Oct. 7-10 in New Orleans, LA.

Mississippi's delegates were Drs. Tim Alford of Kosciusko and Katie Patterson of Indianola. The alternate delegates were Drs. Susan Chiarito of Vicksburg and John Mitchell of Pontotoc. Report from Dr. Alford, Delegate, on Actions Taken by the Congress.

In the French Quarter Tuesday night, dozens of Mississippi and Louisiana family physicians networked and had fun at the MAFP/LAFP's joint Welcome Reception held in connection with the COD and FMX. Goodie bags and prizes were awarded and the entire group 'let the good times roll!'

The AAFP invites chapters to make recommendations to assist the board in making AAFP Commission ( AAFP login required for the link) appointments for 2018. Monday, Oct. 15, is the deadline and members interested in applying must contact their chapter prior to submitting the application. In addition to 23 commission vacancies, there are also AMA delegation positions and the ABFM Director position. The requirements for applying include (a) completed online form, (b) letter of recommendation from your chapter, (c) photo, and (d) completed conflict of interest and disclosure form. The Mississippi State Board of Medical Licensure has put out an alert, warning licensees about a scam on Mississippi doctors. Executive director Dr. Kenneth Cleveland said the scammers are calling physicians, claiming that they work for the MSBML, and asking for personal information. Don't fall for it!
