Chen Scores Perfect 36 on State-Funded ACT

Victor Chen
scored a perfect 36 on the ACT that he took in March at school. A member of the Class of 2018, Chen is part of the first group of Ohio students who took the college-entrance exam this spring for free at school as part of new testing requirements in the 2014 Ohio education law. This was Chen's second attempt at the ACT, but he wasn't aiming for a perfect score the second time around.
Friends and family were very excited for Chen's accomplishment, but his modesty shows when discussing that perfect 36.
"With the caliber of students here at Mason, my perfect score was just a drop in the bucket compared to all the amazing achievements and accolades earned by Mason students. I think a lot of people have the misconception that anyone who earns a perfect score is a genius, but ultimately, it's just a test. I think more than anything it reflects the fact that I took the time to learn the test, and the amazing education that I have received here at MHS."
In college, he hopes to study Economics and/or Biomedical Engineering.

MCS Board Approves 2019-2020 School Calendar
The Mason City Schools Board of Education approved the 2019-2020 school calendar at its June 13 meeting. Due to the significant construction that will take place during the summer of 2019 to complete the district's
Master Facilities Plan
, school will not begin until September 3, 2019 and will end on June 5, 2020.
The 2019-2020 calendar gives a Fall Break from Nov. 27-29, Winter Break from Dec. 23-Jan. 1, and a Spring Holiday from April 10-April 13. There is one
Personal Learning Day
on April 9.
19-20 "Tight" Calendar Needed to Accommodate Construction
During the 2019-2020 school year, the district will implement its Master Facilities Plan; all the district's PK-second grade students will attend the Mason Early Childhood Center, grades 3-6 will attend Mason Intermediate, grades 7-8 will attend Mason Middle School and grades 9-12 will attend Mason High School. The nearly $43 million project does not require a bond-levy because about $34 million is being funded with state tobacco settlement monies that can only be used for school facilities, and the district has set aside existing capital funds for the rest.

Mason City Schools Seeks New Treasurer
A search is underway to find the Mason City School District's next chief financial officer.
On August 8, the Mason City Schools Board of Education anticipates accepting the resignation of Treasurer Ronda Johnson, who was hired for the same position by Wyoming City Schools. Johnson has served as Mason's treasurer since 2014.
"Ronda has done an outstanding job for Mason and we're very disappointed to see her go," School Board President Matt Steele said. "Hiring the district's superintendent and treasurer are the two most important jobs of a Board of Education. Our Board is committed to finding a proactive and innovative leader with deep financial acumen who is excited to join a high-performing, financially stable district blessed with terrific staff and invested parents and community members."

9th Grader's Plan to Generate Electricity from Vehicular Traffic Earns Her National Recognition
Mason High School freshman Laalitya Acharya is one of 10 national finalists in the 2017 Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge. She hopes to change the world by using vehicular motion to generate and harness clean and affordable energy.

The video entries are scored and ranked on creativity, scientific knowledge, persuasiveness and effective communication, and overall presentation. The ten highest scoring entrants are deemed finalists.

Protzman Hired as Director of Concert Bands
Protzman served as the Director of Bands and Performing Arts Chair at Blue Valley Southwest High School in Overland Park, Kansas. He has served in this position since the opening of the school in the fall of 2010. While in this position his ensembles have consistently received top ratings in Kansas Music Educators Association's (KMEA) large and small group festivals. Before coming to Kansas to teach in the Blue Valley School District, Protzman was the Director of Bands at Central Bucks High School West in Doylestown, Pennsylvania.

Mason Loses State Funding
During the final days of the budget process, the district was waiting to see if some modest changes on TPP survived the governor's veto pen. They didn't.

Perfect Zhu Places Fifth in National Math Competition

Peter Zhu
competed in the American Regions Mathematics League's (ARML) annual competition on June 2 and June 3 at Penn State University.
Zhu earned a perfect score in the individual contest - there were only five individuals who scored a perfect in the entire nation - and placed fifth in the overall competition.
In the ARML competition, students meet, compete against, and socialize with one another, forming friendships and sharpening their mathematical skills. ARML is considered the 'World Series' of mathematics!
The competition involves more than 2,000 students and teachers from almost every state, and consists of several events, which include a team round, a power question, an individual round, two relay rounds, and a super relay. In all, about 120+ teams participated at Penn State, the University of Georgia, the University of Iowa and UNLV.

For most Mason students, now's the time to stock up on back-to-school pencils, glue sticks, notebooks and calculators. For some Mason students, however, that's a luxury they cannot afford.
"The Mason Schools Foundation has committed that no Mason student will start school without the right school supplies due to financial circumstances," said Beth Wilson, School Supply Drive Co-Chair.
Please consider sponsoring one or more children with a recommended contribution of $30 per child.

The Mason Schools Foundation will be collecting new school supplies and donations at the Mason Montgomery Walmart from 10-2pm and at the Rusty Bucket all day.
