Dear Friends,
I’m writing to share the news that Joe Hattick will be retiring from the staff of St. Michael’s at the end of May. This bittersweet announcement comes after his more than 15 faithful years of service to our community. Joe’s contributions at St. Michael’s have been numerous, varied, and have significantly impacted the faith of so many. He has worn countless hats (and colorful shirts) and devoutly served God with his many gifts and for this all of us can be forever grateful!
When Joe first shared the news of his retirement - I was excited for him and a little anxious for us. As one of the longest serving staff members at St. Michael’s there is an abundance of history, knowledge, and memories that involve Joe. I know Joe will be missed but I’m grateful that Joe and Mary will continue to call St. Michael’s their spiritual home and many more memories will be made with both of them in the future.
In a year in which so many things have changed in our community, I’m mindful that this announcement will directly impact our children, families, and adults that are actively engaged in ministry with Joe. Upon learning about Joe's retirement plans I'm grateful he graciously agreed to stay around and help us navigate the pandemic. This runway provided a meaningful opportunity for conversations and deep prayer about the future of our family ministries. Later this month we anticipate making an exciting announcement regarding the future direction and investment we will be making in our children, youth, and family ministries at St. Michael's.
A pandemic conscious celebration for someone who has done so much for our community presents a unique challenge. Joe’s last Sunday will be May 23, Pentecost Sunday, and I anticipate we will be worshipping in-person outside followed by a festive celebration after the service. Stay tuned for more details on how we will be honoring Joe. Until then I hope you will join me in congratulating Joe (and Mary) on a well-deserved retirement.
As we did with our most recent transition in our music program, I will be reaching out to our families to listen to their hopes and dreams about the future of our children and youth programs. I look forward to seeing where God may lead us to be faithfully courageous and I appreciate your prayers for our community.
Faithfully in Christ,
The Rev. Matt Holcombe
