Federal agencies have recently entered into an agreement that would transfer administration and oversight of career and technical education (CTE) funding through the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act from the Department of Education (ED) Office of Career and Technical Education (OCTAE) to the Department of Labor (DOL) Employment and Training Administration (ETA). The interagency agreement was signed on May 21, but it was not made public until the status report was filed on June 10, and was developed without any known engagement with the field.
Although implementation of this interagency agreement is currently on hold due to ongoing legal proceedings, the proposed transfer has raised concerns within the CTE community about potential disruptions to program administration and student services. The change could introduce new administrative complexities and affect how CTE programs coordinate with broader educational systems. While ITEEA does not have an official organizational position on this issue, both the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) and Advance CTE oppose the change and have issued a joint statement.
If you’d like to learn more about the proposed transfer and possible implications, we encourage you to educate yourself via this article from Advance CTE. If you have concerns about this change and would like to make your voice heard on this issue, you can contact your representative through ACTE's policy platform.
