SEC recently welcomed home Line Technician Scott Geovannello (photographed above, 4th from right) from his 19-day “United We Light” mission work in Santa Isabel, Ixcan, Guatemala. Geovannello was part of the “United We Light” initiative sponsored by the Virginia, Maryland & Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives in conjunction with the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association International with support from the National Rural Utilities Cooperative Finance Corp. The mission of the recent “United We Light” initiative was to bring power to the 500 residents of the rural village of Santa Isabel. Lineworker volunteers from Virginia and Maryland electric cooperatives were committed to accomplishing the mission, no matter the difficulty.
The meaningful trip was rewarding but not without challenges. The team members were met with civil unrest, protests, debilitating mud, jungle-like conditions, stifling heat, difficult terrain, etc. The group was also met with smiles of gratitude, clean accommodations and good food. In the end, they brought power to 500 grateful villagers who had never had electricity.
“We left with the lights on after constructing and energizing 5.5 miles of line to 103 service connections," said Geovannello. "I sincerely believe we enriched the lives of deserving people, changing their lives forever.”
