2024 Gaff-n-Go T-Shirt Design

CALLING ALL CREATIVE MINDS AND TALENT! SEC is searching for the talents of our employees, vendors and members to be a part of designing the official 2024 Gaff-n-Go Lineworker’s Rodeo – Team SEC t-shirts.

SEC takes great pride in its team of lineworkers competing in this popular annual competition. It’s not just climbing, insulator change out, hurt man rescue and grilling skills that Team SEC shows off at Gaff-n-Go; it’s also the team shirts, which are proudly worn by team members and families and traded amongst fellow electric co-op lineworkers throughout the year at national competitions.

Do you have an eye and talent for design? Know someone who does? SEC wants to see it! Submissions for the 2024 Team SEC Gaff-n-Go t-shirt design are now being accepted! Employees and members are eligible to win a $250 prize, rewarded to the winning designer! Designs must be submitted in PNG format to [email protected], NO LATER THAN JANUARY 4.

Embracing Safety as a Culture,

Not Just a Part of the Job

At SEC, safety is paramount for all of its employees and members. Since 2016, SEC has hosted its annual “Safety Day” to stay ahead of significant and relevant changes in the electrical utility industry that impact safety.

System Operator or Guardian Angel?

SEC and one of its members are especially grateful to System Operator Erin Morgan for her efforts to help an elderly SEC member in Charlotte County during the middle of the night. The member telephoned SEC to report a partial power loss. When a call center representative asked the member questions over the phone regarding the power issue, she was unable to answer the questions but mentioned she had fallen and hit her head.

As Erin read through the call notes, she became concerned for the member. She telephoned Charlotte County EMS to report the incident and asked for a wellness check to be conducted. Erin then dispatched a SEC crew to check on the reported power issue.

“When SEC lineworkers arrived, we found that everything was in electrical working order,” said Line Technician Supervisor Cole Owen. “When the Charlotte County EMS arrived at the member's home, they found her on the floor. EMS helped her up and into bed. Erin’s above-and-beyond work ethic saved this member from a miserable night.”

Changing Lives, One Light Bulb at a Time!

SEC recently welcomed home Line Technician Scott Geovannello (photographed above, 4th from right) from his 19-day “United We Light” mission work in Santa Isabel, Ixcan, Guatemala. Geovannello was part of the “United We Light” initiative sponsored by the Virginia, Maryland & Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives in conjunction with the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association International with support from the National Rural Utilities Cooperative Finance Corp. The mission of the recent “United We Light” initiative was to bring power to the 500 residents of the rural village of Santa Isabel. Lineworker volunteers from Virginia and Maryland electric cooperatives were committed to accomplishing the mission, no matter the difficulty.

The meaningful trip was rewarding but not without challenges. The team members were met with civil unrest, protests, debilitating mud, jungle-like conditions, stifling heat, difficult terrain, etc. The group was also met with smiles of gratitude, clean accommodations and good food. In the end, they brought power to 500 grateful villagers who had never had electricity.

“We left with the lights on after constructing and energizing 5.5 miles of line to 103 service connections," said Geovannello. "I sincerely believe we enriched the lives of deserving people, changing their lives forever.”

It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas!

A holiday tradition continues for the SEC Central District lineworkers at the "Hanging of the Greens" in Burkeville. This small neighboring community is always grateful to the Cooperative for seeing their town lit up with holiday garlands and lights. Thank you to Line Technicians Cameron Gibbs and David Redman (photographed above), as well as to Line Technician Supervisor Dustin Roberts and Line Technician Patrick Robbins.
