Don't Forget to Register for the New Mexico PTA
Male Participation Conference 2017

Friday, April 7, 2017
9:00am - 1:30pm
Registration is now open for the NMPTA Male Participation Conference at:

¡Explora! 1701 Mountain Rd NW, Albuquerque, NM 87104

Thanks to a Noyce Foundation grant, NMPTA is able to offer this Conference FREE to participants from PTA schools and at a low registration cost of $20 per person to non-PTA schools.  The Conference includes morning coffee, lunch and materials.
The Conference focus is involving men - fathers, grandfathers, uncles and significant male role models - in the lives of their students in school and at home.  Research shows that when men are engaged in their children's learning experiences, children are better academic achievers, are more likely to enjoy school, and are more likely to grow up to be tolerant and understanding individuals.  Children benefit from warm and nurturing relationships with men and men are most likely to develop those sort of relationships in environments that value, support and encourage them.
NMPTA has arranged time with ¡Explora! Personnel, who will be demonstrating simple hands-on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) activities that can be easily replicated in the classroom, at evening school events, and at home!  In addition, there will be a presentation from APS Coordinated School Health on "Why Attendance Matters".  What are best practices in getting men involved at elementary, middle and high school?  Hear from presenters on how they involve men at their school.
Registration is limited to the first 50 people so don't delay!  Make certain to invite a member of your school community to attend with you.  Change happens when a team of people are engaged.  Please follow the link here to register.
NMPTA looks forward to seeing you at this special event!

New Mexico Voices for Children
Amy Biehl Youth Spirit Awards

Dear Friends,

For the past 23 years New Mexico Voices for Children has honored the legacy of New Mexico youth Amy Biehl with the Amy Biehl Youth Spirit Awards. We would appreciate your help in disseminating the attached call for applications to NM youth far and wide with an emphasis on reaching those who demonstrate outstanding character and service, including non-traditional and traditional forms of service and leadership representative of the vast diversity that comprises our beautiful state.

The Amy Biehl Youth Spirit Award was founded by New Mexico Voices for Children in 1993-the year that she passed away. Amy Biehl, a graduate of Santa Fe High School, understood that she had a duty to give back- to make life better for others who were not so fortunate. Amy decided to travel to South Africa at the age of 26 as a Fulbright Scholar to support the development of a new constitution. While conducting voter registration for South Africa's first all-race election-the election that would end apartheid-she was killed in a riot. The Amy Biehl Youth Spirit Award honors Amy's commitment to serve by celebrating young people in New Mexico who have stepped up to bring positive change to their communities and the world at large through community service.

Plan Now for Teacher Appreciation Week!

National PTA's Teacher Appreciation week is May 8-12, 2017. We can't wait to celebrate our incredible teachers, who deliver their best to our children every day.
Teacher Appreciation Week is the perfect time to personally thank your child's teachers for making a positive impact on their education and lives.
To help you #ThankATeacher, we've put together a few fun resources, available at PTA.org/ThankATeacher. There, you'll find:
As we honor teachers during May 8-12, we encourage you to reach out to a former teacher in your life to say "Thanks!" Use #ThankATeacher to tell them what you've accomplished because of their influence.
Teachers deliver so much to our students-Inspiration, Motivation, Knowledge and more. Sometimes a simple thanks is all a teacher needs to feel valued.
Share our Teacher Appreciation Week resources with your fellow PTA members and families.
Let's make our teachers feel extra special this Teacher Appreciation Week! Visit PTA.org/ThankATeacher.
