Dear Families,
We are inviting you to make some noise. There is no update on the SHSAT or the future of screened or specialized NYC high schools. Kweller Prep is inviting parents, politicians, elected leaders, parent groups, PTA members and DOE representatives to an important Town Hall demanding transparency with the future of the SHSAT, specialized, and screened high school admissions. Please share it widely. We will send you the zoom link and passcode 30 minutes before the meeting starts. This meeting will be held on Monday, November 9, 2020, from 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

Joshua Wallack, we are thrilled to check your linkedin and see that you graduated from Harvard Business School and Yale University, both Ivy Leagues. Now, can you please use your position as Deputy Chancellor with the NYC Department of Education to help future generations of public school students be awarded the same opportunities to attend great schools as you yourself had?
We are thrilled to see your excellent education on your linkedin. We know you must have worked incredibly hard in years prior for these academic opportunities.

Joshua Wallack, your path to a great college (Yale) , great graduate school (Harvard Business), and now great career (NYC Deputy Chancellor) started in high school. Can you please help us help NYC public school students have your opportunities as well? We called the number above and learned that Nick is on city paid paternity leave until January 2021. His wife had a baby. We emailed Nwidzowski@council.nyc.gov who is supposed to take his place but received no response. Nothing! We are getting no answers whatsoever on the high school application process from any of the emails we have sent informational requests to.

Dear Families,
We are writing to update you that the SHSAT test date still remains unclear, affecting over 30,000 8th and 9th grade students who planned to test. On June 16, 2020, under the guidance of the NYC Mayor Bill DeBlasio and NYC Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza, the Department of Education announced the SHSAT exam would take place on November 7 and 8, 2020. These dates were published in the 2020-2021 NYC High School Handbook and on the DOE website. Since then, it has been impossible to register for the test. There are no sign up links and no opportunities to gather concrete information.

Kweller Commentary: Knowledge is power! In fact, it is so powerful that it is currently being politically controlled by the same ones who are well-educated and awarded their children the opportunity to attend and graduate from screened and specialized high schools. Students, you did not study in vain. Your education is something that no one should have the right to take away from you.

Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza stated he would announce an update to the SHSAT test administration by mid to late October. Since then, we have made multiple requests for clarity, but received no concrete news. At this point, we encourage parents and students to contact those elected to represent them to voice their opinion on the importance of announcing an update to the SHSAT test administration as it was originally planned. There is a state law, the Hecht-Calandra Act, protecting the administration of the SHSAT. The mayor and chancellor have city controls.
Kweller commentary: There is a much larger issue with a lack of adequate K-8 education for all NYC students that is later revealed through SHSAT test results. We should not punish the test. When the Kweller Prep director, Frances, asked the mayor about adding more great public schools and seats during last year's Town Hall, the mayor did not answer affirmatively. The mayor should take responsibility for his role in not providing an adequate K-8 education for all.
