Important Update: Executive Order on Accreditation - Guidance for CAAHEP-Accredited Programs

Dear Program Directors and Institutional Representatives,

The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) is reaching out to provide timely information regarding the recently issued Executive Order on Accreditation signed on April 23, 2025. As your accreditation partner, we are committed to helping you navigate these new federal directives while maintaining rigorous quality assurance standards in allied health education.

Understanding Executive Orders

An Executive Order is a directive issued by the President that manages the operations of the federal government and instructs officials and agencies on how to effectuate a duly passed federal law. While the Executive Order on Accreditation establishes new policy directions, it's essential to understand that the Department of Education (ED) must now develop specific regulations and guidance for implementation. This regulatory process typically includes public comment periods and may take several months before final rules are established.

What This Means for Your Program

The Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) released its analysis of the Executive Order, highlighting several important aspects for accreditors and institutions:

  1. Focus on Educational Outcomes: The Order emphasizes measuring student achievement through completion rates, post-graduation employment, and earnings data.
  2. Reduction of Regulatory Burden: Accreditors will be directed to streamline reporting requirements and eliminate duplicative processes.
  3. Workforce Alignment: Greater emphasis on program alignment with industry needs and employer input in curriculum development.
  4. Innovation Pathways: The Order creates new avenues for innovative educational models to receive accreditation.
  5. Transparency Requirements: Accreditors will be expected to publish more detailed information about accreditation decisions and the metrics used to evaluate programs.
  6. Implementation Timeline: CHEA notes that ED will likely release draft regulations within 120 days, followed by a public comment period.

Institutional Review Recommended

CAAHEP recommends that program directors review the Executive Order with their university leadership, including institutional administration and legal counsel. As this Order may have significant implications for higher education institutions broadly, coordinated institutional responses may be necessary during the implementation phase.

CAAHEP's Response and Support

While the use of demographics in decision-making about admissions, financial issues, etc., is prohibited, health professions educational programs may include an understanding of lifespan and multiple populations to serve all patients.

Our Commitment to You

As these changes unfold, CAAHEP remains dedicated to:

  • Maintaining outcomes-focused Standards that allow for institutional flexibility
  • Supporting programs in meeting both accreditation requirements and regulatory mandates
  • Serving as a trusted partner in navigating the evolving accreditation landscape
  • Advocating for the unique needs of allied health education within the broader regulatory context
