Support for Athletes During Potential School Sport Disruption

Volleyball Alberta has been in communication with School Sport Alberta (formerly Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association) regarding the potential Alberta Teachers' Association job action.

School Sport Alberta has confirmed that their eligibility policies will be paused during any job action. Once regular activities resume, their eligibility policies will again be in effect. Please note that these policies may not cover all districts. Athletes and families are encouraged to confirm any specific policies that apply to school sports in their area.

Clubs may facilitate skills and training sessions during this period to provide athletes with opportunities to maintain their skills and stay active. We encourage clubs to be deliberate in the structure and length of any programs offered so they can be adjusted or cancelled if school sports resume quickly. Note: athletes attending private schools will still have school sport commitments to prioritize.

Clubs should consider offerring programming that is inclusive of all athletes - not just ones who have committed to an Indoor Competitive team. Participation in sport supports both physical and mental well-being, and student-athletes will need additional support during this time. Athletes only need a recreational membership to take part in these club-delivered programs.

Please remember that athletes who have signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) are committed to that club for the 2025/26 season. Club Sessions offered during this break cannot be used as opportunities for signed athletes to seek out other clubs or clubs to recruit signed athletes. Communication or recruiting of early re-signed, re-signed, or signed club athletes is not permitted until after May 31, 2026, which marks the end of the VA indoor club season. For more information, please review Volleyball Alberta’s Conduct for Scouting & Recruiting.

The Fall tryout process is complete for 13U-18U athletes as of October 5; the next opportunity to receive LOI's is during the Winter Tryout Process beginning November 30.

Volleyball Alberta understands that this is a challenging time for schools, teachers, coaches, and student-athletes. We value the role of school athletics and hope any disruption is minimal, allowing student-athletes to return to their school volleyball seasons as soon as possible.
