On February 5, 2026, the City of Stamford notified the Boys & Girls Club of Stamford that asbestos-containing material had been identified at Yerwood Center. The City ordered air quality testing by an independent third party and informed us that the building was cleared for re-entry based on those results. Although the City has cleared the building for re-entry, we have decided out of an abundance of caution that all Yerwood students will be transported directly from school to the Mary C. Rich Clubhouse (347 Stillwater Avenue) for pickup today.

The material must still be professionally remediated. With the safety of our youth, staff, tenants, and community as our highest priority, Yerwood Center will be closed until remediation is complete. At this time, we do not yet have a confirmed timeline for reopening. We felt it was important to share what we know immediately rather than delay communication while awaiting further details.

We know this news places a serious burden on our families and creates uncertainty around childcare, transportation, and daily routines. Many of you rely on Yerwood Center every day, and we do not take lightly the disruption this may cause. Please know we are working urgently and in close coordination with the City of Stamford and Stamford Public Schools to ensure continuity of care and safe alternatives for all who depend on the Club.

Plan for Today

  • All Yerwood students will be transported directly from school to Mary C. Rich Clubhouse, 347 Stillwater Avenue, for pickup
  • Please pick up your child(ren) at the Mary C. Rich Clubhouse today
  • We are actively working to secure alternative sites; in the meantime, the Mary C. Rich Clubhouse will serve all youth. Unless you hear otherwise, please plan for this Monday as well.

We understand this is disruptive and may be stressful for families on short notice. Thank you for adjusting quickly. The health and safety of our youth, staff, tenants, and community will always come first, and we will continue to provide updates as soon as new information becomes available.
